One aspect I observed early about local governments was that "progressive" officials repeatedly hired hyper-conservative city/county managers and attorneys (and defended them, when people got angry) then threw up their hands and said they were powerless to do anything.

I think about that a lot.
one thing about congress that's become very blatant in my life is that they actually kinda enjoy the executive bypassing them all the time to do military shit. this way, their fingerprints don't have to be on any of it. preferring a lack of responsibilities and accountability to their own power.

this is the story of worcester, ma. the second largest city in new england, home to 220,000 people, is at the mercy of a pro-cop city manager hell bent on imposing austerity to give every single cent to the police. the Democratic mayor who selected the city manager claims he’s powerless to stop it

Yes, if you speak out against ICE they'll say you're a lunatic who wants to open the floodgates to scary immigrants. The correct response isn't cowering in a corner, it's asking whether people want to be terrorized by armed masked thugs as a part of daily life

If you're a Democrat, you're a sucker if you imagine this agency has anything to do with immigration. It is--and aspires to be!--a fascist paramilitary goon squad. You should start saying so and lay the groundwork for starving it of funding when you take power

once again, and i am serious, if you took a class from wurman, you should demand a refund
“Birthright subjectship only applied if your parents were under the protection of the sovereign, and if your parents had come unlawfully, without invitation... without safe conduct, they would not have been under the protection of the sovereign,” Wurman said.

it's not just that you don't have to kill yourself / end every workout in pools of sweat to get somewhere, but most people will actually do better with the opposite approach (training cardio hard a couple times a week if at all) which is also pretty cool

not gonna evangelize about it but tbh coming to understand the value of cardio is one of the biggest positive changes I've made of any kind to my adult life, for whatever that's worth
Fitness gurus are always knocking cardio. Well, the elliptical is super effectively for weight loss. It’s low impact so you can do it for long time periods, every day. I can burn 800-1000 calories in an hour. I can do it daily. I lost 100 lbs once doing nothing but that damned boring elliptical.

it's incredible to contemplate: these people don't have enough. they look at your rickety remaining safety nets -- maybe some employer provided health insurance, maybe even a 401k -- and they think: i need to get my greasy lips around those dregs and drink them dry too
