It's really good. consistent page turner despite the length. The most recent Penguin translation is excellent. It zips along, without the ornate nature of the 19th century translation. More complex than it gets credit for when abridged as a kids'

On this day in Canadian parliamentary history - January 7, 1955: The first TV broadcast of the Throne Speech! Over 3 million Canadians watched!

If my math is right, that was nearly 20% of the country's population at the time.

It's fair to say that viewership has declined somewhat since :P

Agnes Owens is wonderful. The forgotten figure from those writing groups in Glasgow led by Philip Hobsbaum that included Jim Kelman, Jeff Torrington, Alasdair Gray, and Liz Lochhead.
Saw her at an event with Kelman in Edinburgh once where she challenged his literary takes, & silenced him.
I love the covers for the new editions of Agnes Owens' novels, which I think all use Joan Eardley paintings.

It's Callan. The three episode finale.
Obviously.
Given that apparently the Stranger Things finale was meh (idk, didn't watch it, just the scuttlebutt) and we're not that far removed from the disastrous GOT finale that retroactively made everyone have never cared about the show:

What's the *best* ending to a show you've ever seen? Quote/reply etc

I went to a conference in the US recently where a senior judge for the Court of Appeals 2nd Circuit (in their 90s) was a keynote speaker. I am sorry to say that the impression created for those from outside the US was that it is ridiculous that they stil sit as a judge.

This week I will be presenting a paper on “statutory backup rights” at the AALS annual meeting. A statutory backup right is a statute that codifies a constitutional right that is believed to be at risk of judicial abrogation.
