Twenty years ago today, February 6, 2004, I started work on my first freelance editing assignment for Wizards of the Coast — the 3.5e sourcebook “Complete Arcane.”

What a long, fantastic trip it’s been.

Watching the Winter Olympics, and every 30 seconds when the “Milano Cortina 2026” logo appears, my brain goes, “They set the numbers at the same font size as the letters but the extended set width of the letters means the numbers look too small!!!”, and I’ve got another week of this to get through.

This, ten thousand times. For me, Roy Lichenstein’s blanket pass from the art world for copyright theft has always said an awful lot about the art world’s attitude toward creativity.
Lichenstein was a thief and a hack. Compare the line work of the panels he copied to the lifeless 'fine art' versions he made. The original comic artists have better construction, more nuanced and confident line work, and they actually created the damn work themselves.

I have a friend who said, of Starfleet Academy, that this took them out of it - that seeing a person in a wheelchair in the 32nd century seemed unrealistic, since medicine in Star Trek "should be able to cure whatever was wrong with them."

That's not the case, for any number of possible reasons.

Important to remember that the social contract works in one direction. The players HAVE to trust the DM, she's their only lens into the world and the ultimate arbiter of their actions.
The players CAN'T deceive the DM and if they did (ie lying about dice rolls) it would be considered cheating.
FRPG GM Tip: Feints, red herrings, and unreliable narrators are great tools for fiction, but a campaign feels more personal than any fiction ever can. Using narrative subterfuge once to deceive the characters is fun. But doing it over and over again runs the risk of the players feeling deceived.

FRPG Player Tip: When joining a new game, definitely think about whether the system feels like a good fit for you. But every system is capable of telling a dizzying array of stories as it’s filtered through the players, so look first and foremost to the type of story the other players want to tell.

Hello! I see you've decided to conflate a human being being an evil fascist apologist committing crimes and perpetuating fraud with (checks notes) being a woman. Perhaps you would like to not do this.

RIP Robert Tinney (November 22, 1947 – February 1, 2026), the artist famous for his playful covers for Byte magazine, a hobbist magazine that ushered in the microcomputing age from the mid-70s through the 90s. I'm honored to have included his work in my own art collection.

Absolutely true across all storytelling platforms. If everything is quicksand, I'm not going to trust someone telling me it's now lava when it's actually been shag rug the entire time.

This is something that @lochinvar.bsky.social and I talk about a lot. We trace the issue to a different core problem of gaming: *in general,* players don't have enough foundation in a setting to know if a lie is plausible, nor the resources to fact-check an NPC's deception.

Bravo Ireland. This is such a great boost for artists. I have an Artists tax exemption in Ireland for works under 50k. It helped me so much - existence in a feast or famine career is hard. But consecutive Irish governments realized that writers, musicians, artists are the lifeblood of the country.
Ireland’s basic income for the arts scheme becomes permanent
When piloted, initiative that provided €325 a week to eligible artists recouped more than its net cost, study shows
