Trump 2: Nazi Boogaloo has made me so glad I'm not working in public health policy funded by government grants and contracts anymore

it was stressful and frustrating enough when the establishment wasn't actively hostile to the idea of public health
“Republicans appear to be quickly pivoting from the debate around Affordable Care Act tax credits to developing their own health policy agenda, with many conservatives now feeling like they have the blessing of President Donald Trump to pursue alternative solutions to spiking insurance premiums.”
Democrats want to extend Obamacare credits. Republicans have other ideas.
Democrats are racing to negotiate an agreement on extending Affordable Care Act tax credits with little indication Republicans will get on board.

I'm desperate for experts again. For actual journalist and critics. Simply having a phone and access to social media doesn't make you knowledgable on certain topics.

Okay I want to say more about this, specifically I want to say: lampshading is a technique to use carefully.

What's lampshading? it's when the author says, yeah, I know this is a problem, I acknowledge it but I'm not going to solve it. Throw a lampshade on it, it's a lamp.
Explanations that hew to realism in a universe like this can make things worse, because they require you to examine a sequence of events which is secretly not entirely sensible in the first place.

there's a YouTuber, NjordArtisan, who has been iterating on the switchblade sword from Dishonored for years now
i hit a button on my newly invented switchblade broadsword and the whole thing launches out of my hands and disappears over the horizon. i never explained what it was supposed to do so everyone is cheering and going nuts

I have long subscribed to the fan theory that "James Bond" is part of the 007 package. It's not the real name of any of the James Bonds we've seen; it's a cover identity passed from agent to agent. I've also long assumed that each version of Bond is in his own universe.
James Bond’s death in No Time to Die is causing a nightmare for the next film. Writers are stuck because Bond “was blown to pieces.”

Anthony Horowitz, author of three 007 novels, says:

“You can't have him wake up in shower and saying it was all a dream."

It also strikes me, given we're in the middle of the stunningly tory admin of the bbc being ousted by gigatories, that art which both mocks and terrifies establishment fascism is especially relevant to me right now
I can see this working. I can see this being very, depressingly, timely and I can absolutely see this being a lightning rod as a result. But honestly? GOOD. Do this right and you'll inspire the people who need it and fuck off the people who richly deserve it.

The famed model held in Helsinki is made out of silicone (from a sculpted foam template), with added doll eyes. It exploded online and turned into a mascot character (サカバンバスピス) in the Japanese pop culture from late 2022 onwards.

Did you know. That the meme-explosion that was the wooden model of Sacabambaspis (an Ordovician jawless fish) held at a Museum in Helsinki, was created by a pioneering Estonian fish paleontologist and palaeoartist, Elga Mark-Kurik. 🧵

we grow so much corn because of subsidies that we *literally* don't know what to do with it

why do you think we make non-dairy creamer out of it?
Thread. Up and down.

And with ethanol, given the amount of fossil fuel inputs required to grow the corn (both anhydrous ammonia produced from natural gas, and fuel inputs for the machinery) to the amount of produced energy, it’s usually at best a wash or more efficient to not grow the corn at all.
It goes even deeper than this. The vast bulk of red state agriculture is corn, soybeans or seed crops.

And most of it is not for US human consumption! We export 20% of our corn, half of our soybean and seeds. The rest?

Most of it becomes oil, animal feed or….ETHANOL.

The subsidized fuel additive.

Red states produce the bulk of our meat, true—though California still produces 8% of American beef.

But the red states’ role as America’s breadbasket is LONG gone. Most red state agro-economy has been redirected from human-grade food to commodity feedstock.

And much of that is on federal welfare.

Especially since a huge percentage of American crops are bought and paid for by the government.

Guess where the huge majority of the taxes that go toward buying those crops come from?

That’s right: Blue states.
Also this guy suggesting that food is “shared” with other states (or countries) out of goodwill, as opposed to for pay:

Good luck eating your way through an exploding silo of soybeans.

Answer: 75% of all American farm workers are Latin American migrants. Yes, the same folks that the party red states support want to deport.

And no, they’re not doing it “to be nice.”
California alone produces a third of all the food America eats. So this is a lie.

But let’s break down the food produced by the red states:

Guess what percent is harvested by people from Latin America?

Bluesky suspended Sarah Kendzior today for no reason whatsoever. She just shared excerpts of her articles, which were as always incisive and not offensive at all. Hey @pfrazee.com this is super not OK. I know her- we've interacted a fair bit via chats and her work is essential.
