Hey, so, I don’t do civil litigation, is it generally considered good when the judge does this?

I felt the weight of being interviewed by the wonderful @globalvoices.org, and did my best to answer honestly and openly.

The work of independent storytelling - fiction, representative, non-fiction, activism, journalism - is vital. If you see that, please talk about this bundle. #BookSky (1/2)
StoryBundle's In Translation bundle to benefit Global Voices Lingua: Interview
My primary goal was that the bundle be representative of our broader world, without a focus on the regions most already represented in collections of translation.

look Max have you considered the possibility that the president is completely checked out and unaware of both his surroundings and his own actions, and also by nature of his job has 24/7 access to a "kill the entire world" button

Thats why when someone says "xxx was bad but without it we wouldn't have yyy", I always encourage them to think of the opportunity cost, to imagine the potential futures lost rather than settle into justifications for suboptimal pasts.

It's not just the women and girls we know of. It's all their future work, and everything they could have been, and how we build structures that shelter their abusers. It's how a man's future has always been worth more than my past, present, and future combined.

"We would have lost so much if we'd driven him away" is the justification.

But we lost all those girls. We lost the women they would have become. We lost the work they would have done. Why was his future work so much more valuable than theirs?

And when people tried to make this part of the conversation, they were told "don't speak ill of the dead" and "we're walking on foundations he built, give the man his grace."

But all those girls--dozens, based on confirmed accounts, maybe hundreds, based on the time scale at play--didn't come back.

Isaac Asimov was a founder of modern science fiction. His work and ideas inform almost everything.

He was also a serial sexual harasser, something confirmed by multiple first-person accountings from members of East Coast fandom.

This is only related in a sideways manner, but: the story of any small slice of humanity is the story of humanity, just boiled down and distilled. So:

In 2020, we had a lot of conversations about harassment at SF/F conventions, and Isaac Asimov came up several times.
the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women — and interactions with them — through the lens of sex

Extrapolating in another direction: I also often think of just how much human potential has been lost because of systemic racism, classism and imperialism. All the joy, innovation, art and more that we didn’t get - the opportunity cost of systems where one or a few men (its usually men) benefit.

This sits in the back of my head like a cyst: how many have we lost, how many more do we lose all the time?

How many children with the potential to reframe human understanding like Einstein or lift hearts like Mozart are born and never educated, spend childhoods dissolving ewaste in acid?

Local election officials need to have legal documents pre-drafted to try to prevent this:
Here's @rickhasen.bsky.social detailing the scenario in which Trump uses search warrant to seize ballot boxes in a contested 2026 locale. This is more worrisome than ICE at the polls. Hasen also suggests ways to act against this now.

It's harrowing stuff:

JFC, imagine if they provided top cover for Osama Bin Laden like this?

"It was unclear if Mr. Bin Laden was aware that orders to fly planes into the World Trade Center would result in the fiery death of thousands."
The New York Times has finally covered the Trump video of Obama as an ape — and they are still providing cover for him. Fuck the Times.

‘One officer told me that I "had no chance of returning to Minnesota" and that "the best thing for (me] is self-deportation." …
She offered me $2600 to self-deport.
I refused.
I wanted to talk to my attorney.
They didn't tell me the judge had already ordered my release and return to Minnesota.’

Love how the presumption here is that the President doesn't know what he's sharing and that's fine and normal.

Sorry, no, if the President doesn't know what he's sending out then that is indisputable proof of gross incompetence, cognitive unfitness, or both.
