this is basically like the fabrication of Iraq WMD lies but instead of manufacturing a war it is a conspiracy to deport a completely random person
This whistleblower says he pressed Trump officials for evidence of Abrego Garcia's MS-13 ties. He refused to sign a brief that he said contained falsehoods. He was fired.

The whole case stinks from top to bottom in many other ways, too. Here's a rundown:

The thing about the Khalil case is that it's very very good that he's free now but you can't have it take three months between "the government kidnaps you off the street for no basis reason whatsoever" and "a judge makes them let you go." You just can't.

Really not looking forward to being told by an evaluation committee that I don’t need to travel to African archives, I just need an LLM to scrape the internet (which by then will be full of racist slop)
Everything is horrible about this, but my personal punctum is this little tidbit that isn’t even on the topic itself. A) the whole point of our profession is to sift through lots of material, that’s how you find topics and b) this is patently untrue, as any actual historian knows!

It's worth remarking how much the conspiratorial fantasies Greenblatt is spinning about student protesters - part of a cabal of foreigners which connects every social movement to every other, loyal to foreign nations overseas - parallels the historic structure of conspiratorial antisemitism.

"There is a through line from Occupy Wall Street to BLM to ‘defund the police’ to ‘River to the Sea,’” Greenblatt said of anti-Zionist protesters. "These are the same kind of nihilists."

my brain broke when i read a comment that people should listen to arabs who have direct experience with TSA/CBP/ICE rather than lawyers

it's like a rehash (read: gross misreading) of local knowledge/decolonial epistemologies, weaponized for the purpose of sabotaging people by making them act stupid

In 1977, New York City changed its seal to designate 1625 as its official year of establishment. But in 2025, you can still ride subway trains that are so old the wallpaper has the pre-77 city seal listing 1664 as the year the city was born nygroove.nyc/the-one-plac...
The one place where New York City is still 361-years-old
Take a close look at the fading wallpaper on some subway trains and you can find a surprise.
