A number of weeks ago, I mentioned that I keep a "craft journal" — a journal that's about the books I've read with analysis through the lens "how can this inform my writing?"

Many iterations later, have a free PDF of what I'm calling "Reading Selfishly:"

A guide to reading, reflecting, and analyzing fiction writing of any genre for authors and aspiring authors.
Authors are often told that in order to write, we have to read — many people (mis)interpret that to mean reading by evaluating books or composing book reviews. This journal is intended for authors to ...

The act of writing is *thinking*. If you do not allow yourself to think thoughts that feel wrong, you will never get a feel for what feels *right*.

Similarly, turn away from falling glassware. Do not get a spray of glass up into your face. I know you think you can catch it in time but you probably shouldn't try. I have literally picked tiny jar shards off my face and if I didn't wear glasses they'd probably have been in my eyes.
As many of us begin Christmas meal prep, allow me to share the advice that my ER nurse sister puts in the chat every year:

A dropped knife has no handle. Jump away. Let it fall. You can pick it up and wash it.

I love this thread!
I do think this is true. I'm often guilty myself of underplaying what the work I do looks like or how much time and effort it takes. Research isn't 'just reading' or a question of sucking up summaries others have created. It's knowledge creation.

So let me go through the process with an example 1/
What historians (and other scholars do) is create knowledge. We should use that phrase more and talk about what it means. I think we don't, and it's part of why AI enthusiasts are confused when we don't readily agree that our work can be replicated/replaced by their products.

JURY: I have a crush on Jenny, I'm sure Melrose won't mind if I bring her to dinner
ME: Melrose will ABSOLUTELY mind
MELROSE [a bit later]: Ugh Jenny seems to be lurking around somewhere

The ACA isn't just "health care for people who don't have a conventional employer." It also disallows something that was incredibly common 20 years ago, which I fear is getting lost to generational memory: insurance companies could deny you health care for essentially any previous health problem.
I'm dubious about Amazon's commitment to keeping pre-existing conditions a thing of the past.
