Autistic burnout isn’t a “rough patch”.

It’s the bodymind shutting down after years of masking, unmet needs, and constant demand.

It can last months or years.

It’s not failure – it’s years of survival catching up.

Recovery means redesign, not pep talks.

It means making changes.

Autistic Burnout looks a lot like Depression, but it’s not the same.

It’s not caused by lack of serotonin or extenuating circumstances, per se.

We go into burnout because our needs, sensory, emotional, and material are lacking and our nervous system can no longer compute

Did you know...?

Autistic burnout is pervasive, long-term (3+ months) exhaustion, loss of function, and reduced tolerance to stimulus. It's described as being the result of chronic life stress and a mismatch of expectations and abilities without adequate supports.

"yeah I'm fine thanks" might be the lie that's uttered most often, and most casually, on any given day in any language.
Sometimes when friends and family tell you they’re doing alright, we might have to read between the lines to find out how they’re really feeling.

Thanks so much to glimpseofarainbow for their fantastic illustration.
