Here some of the latest stuff I've worked on.

Follow me for game dev and other shenanigans.

total insanity man. there's lot of proximal causes, but the main issue is just capital being divorced from the human status of being in charge of the company. as soon as capital isn't in the same building as workers you're fucked fucked fucked.
What the hell are we even doing here:

Notepad is, by definition, the gd Bic Crystal of programs.

It does its thing, and we neither ask nor want anything else from it.

Now this supposedly basic-ass pen needs to lug around a whole suitcase of bs because Microsoft lost the plot ages ago.
Notepad should not know what the internet is. If you have notepad talking to remote servers you're already like 10 steps into a "factors leading to" slide.

What the heck are they doing over there
The AI features added to Notepad created a critical exploit vulnerable to loading a compromised txt file.

The fix is part of Patch Tuesday, so update your systems.

AI is not a feature I ever desired in Notepad. I should look into some alternatives...

I am starting a studio! We are small and scrappy and have no money. Why am I doing this? Because the only ones who can protect art are the ones who value it. Disney using AI? Yuck. Netflix buying WB? Also yuck. In 10 years what is even going to be left.

The funniest thing is how often a ‘publisher’ is three charismatic networkers in a trenchcoat, atop the exact same marketing teams and porting houses you can seek out direct.

I maintain that this is the moment a lot of folks realise that they can just do direct deals with porting houses and marketing teams.

Publishers got used to low risk thanks to platform deals and crowdfunding. They need to remember that ‘absorbs risk’ is their primary non-replaceable role tout suite
"we shouldn't have to work for free on a game until it's nearly-done enough to get funding" and "it's the only thing you can really do so you should do it if you want to make games" are both true imo and it's shit but what else is there really to do that isn't just give up

The fun bit is getting something working.

The less fun bit is dealing with all the edge cases and clean up and testing all that. That bit often takes longer as well.

Man, I used to think I could get ~100K from a publisher to make a simplified fighting game based on bear puns back in 2018...

Fuk yeah
So I read in some article that folks are adding deliberate typos to their writing in order to dispel suspicions that they’re getting machines to speak for them. That’s coward shit. I say just use the word “fuck” more.

In the face of enshittification, commence the enfuckening.

I used to talk about how impossible it is to get a publisher/funding for an indie fighting game, mostly because they don't know how to sell it to a very finnicky audience.

Now, between the current state of game dev financing in general and big profile fighting games having bad times....

From what I'm reading around: half the roster was also behind paywalls??

Of a roster of 12?!?!

I hate what's happening to the team but come oooooon!!!

Quién iba a decir que el juego que salió con la mitad de un roster de sólo 12 luchadores bloqueados tras un muro de pago tendría problemas a la hora de captar gente.

When I first started learning fighting games over a decade ago, Pat's blog taught me so much about fighting game strategy when that info was thin on the ground. He's a pillar of the FGC and he and everyone else affected by the layoffs deserved so, so much better
Ten years on 2XKO, 12 at Riot and I got laid off with 30min notice lol

Gonna take some time.

*sigh*

Just...

It's a niche!! Fighting is a niche that had a mainstream revival like 5 years ago between games, events, etc.

We were eating well. Too well. Games got greedier, events too.

This took too long, and I have my doubts for Marvel Tokon and Invincible VS too. FGC ain't the same.
Riot spent a decade developing a fighting game then laid off around 80 developers less than one month after release:

I really do think this is an excellent metaphor for the moment.
I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.
