if only there were people out there with good ideas who needed funding
AI filmmaking is completely unserious.

You've got people with $30k begging the internet for ideas by next week because they have nothing of their own to say, it's just slop for the sake of slop. Embarrassing state of affairs.

In Donkey Kong 64, the Giant Spider miniboss can only be fought once. Modifying the game to fight it a second time makes it unceremoniously explode. While this appears to be a glitch, examining the code reveals it was actually deliberately added for the developers' own amusement.

this essay about the importance of in-person gaming communities (DDR specifically, but it pertains to a lot of similar fandoms) is really lovely imo www.mothership.blog/love-letter-...
A love letter to the rhythm game communities that helped me find myself
It was in the arcade around DDR machines that I first met people like me — kids picked on for being "weirdos," for being neurodivergent, for being queer.

I understand framing the AI bubble RAM supply crisis in terms of stuff like video game consoles because nerds can conceptualize that but the framing does really undersell the sheer magnitude of how it's going to fuck up everything that even touches a computer.

i have sympathy for journalists making public mistakes and having to eat shit over them, it happens to the best of us, but also...maybe don't use the glorified autocorrect with delusions of grandeur as a key part of your workflow.

The funniest part of the RAM pricing thing is it fucks up AI stuff too. You need a phone to talk to these models. You need a computer. They increased the default RAM on the base MacBook Air in part to handle local models! You need some local computing to get to the cloud!

Super Mario World was shown in early screenshots to have a mushroom-shaped overworld. However, development files show that this concept went much further. The mushroom island eventually connected to a large mainland. It is unknown why such an elaborate overworld was completely scrapped.

The fact that these sentences always end with "... which we will cram with more work for them" and not "... so we moved to a four-day workweek" really illustrate the hollowness of some AI evangelists' promises that AI will deliver us to some kind of post-work utopia.
“By removing writing from reporters’ workloads, we’ve effectively freed up an extra workday for them each week” is such a strange sentence to read.

correct! every post about fixing a broken games industry that involves [specific games industry tweaks] and not [destroying a speculation-mad executive class and using their bones for compost] is just wasting everyone's time
if you asked me to diagnose the western game industry's current problem it would start with "landlords have absorbed basically all disposable income"

I get not liking Suda 51/Grasshopper’s games but it’s hard to play Romeo Is A Dead Man and not feel a little embarrassed by the lack of ambition and creativity in a lot of games just visually.

The amount of times I sit in a call with a dreamer and their dream game is basically "everything from my favorite six games smashed together into perfect harmony and there was endless flawless content and it has graphics everyone likes" and I have to explain that making feet go on stairs is hard
i think what a lot of people never seem to realize is that a lot of people's vision of an "epic dream game" isn't actually very deep and comes down to scale and/or having a lot of features, whereas by embracing limitations you can be pushed in a far more radical direction.
rpgmaker definitely isn't the right tool for everyone, but I think using opinionated pre-baked tools to make some games would be very instructive to a lot of folks setting out to make their epic custom dream game. they're a much lower-stakes way to learn important lessons like "how to tell a story"

90% of the time these people (bless them!) will say all this with all of their heart, then you sit down with their game and it has the ugliest, most impenetrable interface you could possibly imagine.

People falling in love with AI models is obviously baby brain shit but the people who are like “don’t you DARE change the underlying model you killed her!” are funnier. Like they can’t even accept the idea of an identity changing even in a word prediction model.
