I wanted to provide a thread here of some of the things I've been involved with in the fight against unethical generative AI for easy reference, starting with my work with @GaryMarcus.bsky.social. Our article shows irrefutable evidence of blatant plagiarism 🧵

"I'm glad you entitled, elitist Hollywood artists are losing your jobs to AI," they say to an art school dropout who lives in Michigan in a small, 100-year old house with 3 cats and bats in the walls. Sorry for trying to entertain you doing something I'm passionate about, my bad.

"At this point I may just cancel my Netflix subscription and just generate my own movies and TV shows."

Hyperbole or not, this is exactly why this isn't fair use. AI companies are profiting off IP and work that isn't theirs and it's absolutely hurting artists and filmmakers.

"... those same manufacturers "internally estimate the shortage will last until 2030, or even for another 10 years."

I'm gonna vomit.
“.. ‘many system vendors will go bankrupt or exit product lines due to a lack of memory. Mobile phone production will be reduced by 200-250 million units, and PC and TV production will be significantly reduced.’ Yikes.”

I don't want to sound crazy, but could Big Cheese be piping in cheddar dreams through my Wi-Fi or something? Sometimes I wake up at night with an insatiable, unshakeable urge to eat shredded cheese out of the fridge. Can someone get RFK Jr on the horn, I think he might be interested in this.

It's 2033, Elon's largest data center known as the Goon Farm suffers a catastrophic loss as Amish revolutionaries trebuchet burning furniture into the methane gas turbines. Grok issues a Cease-goon, diverting compute to Optimus security bots in Cybertrucks that are immediately defeated with hoses.

AI filmmaking is completely unserious.

You've got people with $30k begging the internet for ideas by next week because they have nothing of their own to say, it's just slop for the sake of slop. Embarrassing state of affairs.

It's been brutally cold here, but it's warmed up just enough to alert us to bats in the bedroom wall as they squeak and scratch their way around. They're protected, so we're neighbors until we can evict them in the spring, lol, joy.

For my money, the way thousands of regular people are self-organizing to resist data centers is one of the most cautiously hopeful stories going right now.

Facebook just took my girlfriend's profile photo with both of us in it and presented AI generated videos of us together without consent in any way shape or form. Unbelievably pissed off, what the fuck.

wild AI story from the Olympics
ice dancers were told to use songs "in the style of the 1990s." One Czech pair tried using AI to pump out a song to skate to, but their AI bot fully plagiarized "You Get What You Give" by The New Radicals and they had to change it

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.
