Generative AI Has a Visual Plagiarism Problem
Experiments with Midjourney and DALL-E 3 show a copyright minefield
spectrum.ieee.org
I wanted to provide a thread here of some of the things I've been involved with in the fight against unethical generative AI for easy reference, starting with my work with @GaryMarcus.bsky.social. Our article shows irrefutable evidence of blatant plagiarism 🧵

Found a dead snake while hiking today which bummed me out, but later found this guy in the middle of the trail, looking like a rock, far from any water. Grabbed him up and hiked him over to a pond where I know the snappers live. Godspeed little fella.

🔥 Warner Bros is suing Midjourney!🔥
They've cited mine and Gary's work like in the other suit, including that I was banned for criticizing the company.
This now means Midjourney is being sued by Warner Bros, Disney, Universal, and the class action from artists.
Let's gooo! 🔥

1/7 This is Showrunner AI, a startup that just a few weeks ago got Amazon funding to become the “Netflix of AI” as reported by Forbes, Business Insider, NBC News and so on.
Frustratingly, no news outlets asked or researched the data used by Showrunner. Well after some digging here’s it is👇

The Showrunner AI people say it's NOT just a tool, it's a competitor, and that pencils don't stand up and write by themselves.
This is what artists have been saying, but used as pro-AI marketing. It's the quiet part out loud, and quite frankly, probably good evidence in court.

Stumbled across a turkey and her two poults in the woods today. They weren't bothered by us at all, we walked alongside them for a few minutes while mom picked berries, it felt like Jurassic Park.
Later I saw one fly 50 feet up into a tree. I couldn't believe it, there were others up there too, lol

The CEO of RunwayML has previously blocked me because of these types of criticisms, but I'd love for him to explain why he's ripping off existing movies for their AI products. Is one class action lawsuit not enough?🧵

The tech industry needs serious, meaningful regulation about the things it can sell and how it can sell them, and the neoliberal bullshit of “free markets” has allowed this nakedly harmful software to proliferate, taking advantage of the fact that more people than ever feel alone and desperate
Don’t think I’ve ever muttered the words “fuck me sideways” quite so much reading a story as this one.

In the Disney lawsuit, 10 pages are dedicated to citing the work we did. In pursuit of this evidence, Midjourney banned me 3 times and updated their ToS. The first ban encouraged me to dig a lot deeper, so I'd like to congratulate CEO David Holz on his massive unforced error.
🔥 It's happening! Disney and Universal are suing Midjourney and they cited mine and Gary Marcus' work exposing their infringement in their filing. LET'S GO! 🔥

This lawsuit is brutal. One of the exhibits is the letter Universal sent to Midjourney, including a quote from a 2022 Forbes interview that I bet midjourney regrets

AI lovers idolize Rick Rubin because he's created this sort of mythological idea guy persona for himself and they think with enough "taste" and AI, they can be rockstars and directors without ever having to do any real work.
Rick Rubin is a loser hack so it makes total sense he'd collaborate with Anthropic on a "Tao-inspired guide to vibe coding" (gagging just typing that) (www.thewayofcode.com).
And now he's on the a16z pod shilling shit with the two absolute worst pissbrains out there. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7s9C...

It's 2045, a jobless 55 year old man activates the Neuralink he's still paying off to access X using the WiFi outside his mom's house. He's not allowed inside. He uses his last Fart-coin to make a promoted post. It says:
"Yeah, but imagine what AI will be able to do in 2 years."

Why are so many people outside of the entertainment industry concerned with how much money a movie or game makes? Out of all the interesting discourse you could have, you're going with spreadsheet? Do you have 5 shares of the company? Snap out of it, I beg you.

One of my older neighbors flagged me down and asked if I had one of "those phones that can identify plants." I was like, yup, and he walks me over to a bunch of these under a tree. He was so excited, haha.
