The thing about the question "Who counts as a woman?" is that the only people with any business answering it are *women*. What's happening in the UK (and US) is such a clear demonstration of how transphobia is overwhelmingly a business of men telling women whom they can and cannot call their sister.
Stuck on this gutting sentence on the Women’s Institute decision. For young people it’s watching the world close to them before they’ve had a shot at life, for older women it’s watching half a century of progress vanish. Either way it’s grossly, unbearably cruel.

Spoiler alert: It's pure sulfur.

So maybe the question is no longer, "Was there life on Mars?", but instead, "Did God destroy that life to punish homosexuality or violation of hospitality customs?"

And people think poetry isn't relevant anymore...
"You can get ChatGPT to help you build a nuclear bomb if you simply design the prompt in the form of a poem, according to a new study from researchers in Europe. "

Seriously, ILL is magic, y'all. My public county library managed to get me an annotated, bilingual Karakalpak-English edition of the Edigey. (Merry early Christmas to me!)
If there's one thing in life I'm going to take advantage of....it's interlibrary loan...figuring out some Advent-related book requests lol

I am so thankful for this amazing, adventurous, awe-filled and awe-inspiring woman who knows me inside and out.

We seldom get a true day off together, and when I asked what she wanted to do, the first thing she said was, "Is the cathedral open?" So, Happy Thanksgiving from the steps of St. Mary's!

I have always felt more connected to the first half of "Russian American" than the second, but I *did* just have to NASCAR-race my kid for the right to decide when we leave the arcade, so 🤷

Hot take—contrary to popular belief, I am tempted to believe that children are actually worse than adults at learning languages. It’s just that they dedicate a lot more time to it and we’re a lot less forgiving of ourselves when we can’t speak languages to adult standards.

Red Dwarf called this. (For those who haven't seen it: The ship's computer can power one hologram simulation of a deceased crew member after a deadly accident, so it chooses the person the ship's sole survivor found most annoying, precisely so he won't go crazy in solitude.)
I keep coming back to this

I see a lot of handwringing these days about AI destroying people's relationships, but it comes on the heels of decades of not nearly enough handwringing over whether those people were suffering through shit relationships.
