Writer of crime fiction under my own name. Published author (starting Sept. 8, 2023!) of morally-deficient pulp novels as Clint Reno.
There's a film that definitely leaves an impression.

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

This is actually good spin, or would have been. But the fact that the Democratic cave happened without even a coordinated, agreed-upon message like this indicates the depth of the leadership void.

Seems obvious to me. You start the Bond series over and update the titles: DR. MUSK, FROM PYONGYANG WITH LOVE, CRYPTOFINGER... Just imagine an AI Shirley Bassey belting out that number!*
James Bond’s death in No Time to Die is causing a nightmare for the next film. Writers are stuck because Bond “was blown to pieces.”

Anthony Horowitz, author of three 007 novels, says:

“You can't have him wake up in shower and saying it was all a dream."

The last sentence of this flash story is wonderfully noir. Great work, @keithroysdon.bsky.social.

there's a moment in PARADISE LOST where Satan arrives in Eden and realizes Hell isn't a place; it's a thing he carries within him and it'll follow him wherever he goes. and i think about that when i see these awful rich men whose monstrous wealth has enriched them not at all

Anthony Burgess. Now there's a writer who could do a fire scene. I felt my fingertips getting scorched from holding the pages.

DRAGONSLAYER (1981)
A superb effort. The 1980s are littered with bold films in the sci fi/fantasy/horror genre that bombed at the box office. This sad fact prompts dark thoughts about the Baby Boom generation.

Another great read from Andrew about a lost voice from the smut pulp era.

He digs deep and gives us details of the real woman behind the pen. It's a compelling bit of research and it stands as a good reminder that even when the books were meant to be disposable, the people who wrote them weren't.
To mark the re-publication of her books, my latest Substack post is about the now largely forgotten author Jane Gallion, her publisher Essex House, and the hard life that was being one of America’s first female smut writers. Free to read at the link below.

Writers who can't write well about fire must study writers who can.

I mean, if that slob Shakespeare could invent new words, why not me?
I have invented a new adverb: locomotively.

I will not be taking any questions at this time.

Let's spare a moment of kind thought for the Chuck Schumer apologists.
It must be utterly exhausting.
SCHUMER is on the floor now making this offer to end the shutdown:

Clean CR
Bipartisan "minibus" of approps bills
1-year ACA funding extension
Bipartisan cmte to negotiate on health care

"This is a reasonable offer that reopens the government, deals with health care affordability."

Literary fiction requires no plot. In fact, plot is an embarrassment to the literary writer. Being caught plotting is like walking out of a restroom with toilet paper stuck to your shoe.
