Writer of crime fiction under my own name. Published author (starting Sept. 8, 2023!) of morally-deficient pulp novels as Clint Reno.
"Discretion is a great killer of God's truth or the devil's. We must not wound, we must not discharge a nauseous stink in the nostrils of the hypocritical."

I wrote a scene set in Edinburgh this week. I didn't even remotely do the city justice, unfortunately.

Anthony Burgess. Now there's a writer who could do a fire scene. I felt my fingertips getting scorched from holding the pages.

DRAGONSLAYER (1981)
A superb effort. The 1980s are littered with bold films in the sci fi/fantasy/horror genre that bombed at the box office. This sad fact prompts dark thoughts about the Baby Boom generation.

He's retiring and this is the note he wants to end on? What a disgrace.

Writers who can't write well about fire must study writers who can.

An embarrassing number of these to-be-donated books are the result of accidentally buying the same book twice.

Under Troy's wall, in mid-battle,
Cygnus, the son of Neptune,
Had gone through the Greeks twice
And sent a freshly butchered thousand
Tumbling into the underworld.

(Love that "freshly butchered thousand.")

But none of it was enough. Whatever he ate
Maddened and tormented that hunger
To angrier, uglier life. The life
Of a monster no longer a man...

"Hoby's face was too much the painted devil's to summon a child's fear in daylight - an eye shut forever, cheek-scores that dust loved, black teeth showing their waists, a party beard full of crumbs. He grinned, a pirate. He stank of Banbury cheese. He belched forth the soul of an alehouse."

Pitch: Wizard of Oz reboot.
The new ruler is a New Yorker named Walter Skagg who has declared himself President for Life.
Dorothy asks the local elites: "Why don't you oppose Skagg?"
"Because he's all-powerful!"
"How do you know?"
"He told us so!"
"I regret to inform you that you're all morons."

Hercules himself was overtaken
By a whisper,
By rumor -
Rumor who loves to spice big bowls of the false
With a pinch of the true

There the Lord of Hell suddenly saw her.
In the sweep of a single glance
He fell in love
And snatched her away -
Love pauses for nothing.

Beginnings are special
because most of them are false
The new person you become
with that first sip of wine
was already there.

"...and Achilles chopped his neck/ and his sword sent head and helmet flying off together/ and marrow bubbling up from the clean-cut neckbone."

"Challenge accepted, you magnificent Greek son of a bitch!" Clint Reno roared, then scurried off to research the color and texture of human bone marrow.

The Great Wall of China is over 13,000 miles long, over 25 feet tall, over 13 feet deep.
And how did Genghis Khan surmount this mammoth obstacle in his quest to conquer China?
Simple.
He bribed one of the gatekeepers and marched his army through at a stately pace.

"The blow strikes a glowing anvil... The great figure -- is it Thor, the great god of fire, or Wotan, forger of the Universe? -- pounds down with the hammer again and again."

I imagine John Milius smiling the whole time as he wrote the script for CONAN THE BARBARIAN, don't you?
