Happy Halloween! I have a new short story to share with you, but it’s so unique in format and design that I felt it needed a brief essay for folks who don’t know the backstory. Click through to read the essay and “Monstrum Sub Lecto,” and enjoy!

Yesterday’s #BookMail was the next case in #EdMcBain’s 87th Precinct series. Coming to the end, with only a handful to go. First installment I can recall that didn’t open with a dead body on Page One. A drug deal? Outside the US? Bring it on.

I’m a sucker for a good coming-of-age story. FALL IN ONE DAY by @cterlson.bsky.social is not just good, it’s fantastic, detailing a young man’s attempt to make sense of the kidnapping of his best friend while navigating friendships at school and changes in his own home.

Added the last two Frenzi books to the library today, @pointofimpactbooks.bsky.social. Thinking Book Six will be my first read of the New Year. Looking forward to it, sir.

In a recent promo about her debut novel, BETTER TO BEG, @keersteemack.bsky.social said she knew nothing about making music or touring. If true, I have even more respect for her than I already did, because this book reads like a memoir by someone who’s made her living on the road.

Added @keersteemack.bsky.social’s debut novel to the e-shelves. Can’t wait to check it out. Her voice is one of a kind.

#BookMail, care of @anxietypress.bsky.social and @jdclappwrites.bsky.social. Such a beautiful cover. The ToC is filled with top-notch writers. The proceeds go to charity. Grab a copy today!

The short review: I’ve been reading fantasy for 40ish years — Tolkien, Hickman & Weis, Jordan, Eddings, GRRM, Abercrombie, etc — and @zbsteele.bsky.social’s WHISPERS OF THE STORM not only falls in my top-ten this year, but is also one of the best fantasy novels I’ve ever read.

#BookMail, Part Two. I’ve read all of the Shivers anthos from @cemeterydance.bsky.social, but I think this installment may have slipped past me. Grabbed a copy for the rare King story, sticking around for the rest of the amazing ToC.

#BookMail, Part One. Needed the next installment in #EdMcBain’s 87th Precinct series, but had to go the eBay route because I think this book is out of print? Only other time I came across this was with DOLL, if I remember right.

#BookMail from @pmpress.bsky.social. Missed this when it first came out. Given how timely these comics seem to be 100+ years after they were created, I feel like there will be some facepalming in my future.

If you’re looking for a quick fix this holiday weekend, head over to the ‘zon and grab “Irish,” a short story by @russellthayer10.bsky.social. Such a clever bit of noir about a girl wise beyond her years…and not someone you’d ever want to cross. Link below. Best buck you’ll spend today.

Good to be back in Brubaker & Phillips’ CRIMINAL with their latest installment, THE KNIVES. The tale revisits some characters from past books and weaves their storylines together, expanding on history while also giving us one helluva bridge to future stories. Can’t wait for more.

@joelnedecky.bsky.social’s THE BROKEN DETECTIVE details a two-week period in which PI Jake Joelsen tries to complete a missing-persons case before heading to prison for assault, pulling together enough money to make sure his mother is cared for during his absence.

TITANIUM NOIR is a PI story at heart, but takes place in a SFF world where the rich can enhance their bodies and prolong life. When one of these Titans is murdered (an uncommon occurrence), detective Cal Sounder is swept up in the intriguing mystery, hunting for clues.

Finished WHIPCORD from @pointofimpactbooks.bsky.social, and it’s another home run. This installment sees Frenzi trying to start anew on a ranch in Montana. Great side story that draws him back into the mix, followed by nonstop action straight through to the wild finale.
November 13, 2025 at 3:00 AM
What a finale! #DannySophabmisay’s “Pain Killer” is as dark as it gets, touching on the nature of addiction and how far it will drag a person down. Just brutal stuff, but so damned good.

Go grab this issue. Fantastic stories from start to finish.

Never a dull moment when #AnthonyNeilSmith is at the helm. “Mapache Is Ravenous” brings back a favorite of mine, this time in a scheme that has more twists and turns than an amusement park ride. Add in some gritty shenanigans and dark humor, and it’s another winner from The Professor.

Issue 15 of Guilty Crime Story Magazine is shaping up to be one of the best installments yet. “Missing Rachel” by #ChristineEskilson tells the story of an unfortunate death that happens during a girls’ weekend…but was it truly an accident?
November 11, 2025 at 3:34 PM
“Mick and Petey’s Dumpster Dive” by #JackBunker is another winner in this already-excellent issue of @GuiltyCrimeMag. What starts as a quick check for a misplaced item turns into so much more for the title characters.

Been thinking I’m due for a rewatch of World’s Greatest Dad, one of the most darkly humorous movies I’ve ever seen, to the point of laughing at stuff that is so uncomfortable you wonder what the hell is wrong with you. Any other fans of this one out there?
November 9, 2025 at 8:16 PM
My Guilty read-through continues with “Play It Cool” by @brandonbarrows.bsky.social, the tale of a bored group of friends who goes out looking for trouble and finds it…with a twist. A little different writing style from Brandon in this one, which I dug.
November 9, 2025 at 8:01 PM
After reading some pretty heavy stuff lately, @ajstanton.bsky.social’s GUTTER PUNCH was the perfect change of pace. Two rival media moguls have it out for each other in this over-the-top tale of mayhem, humor, sleaze, and debauchery. Fans of Ryan C. Thomas’ RATINGS GAME would dig this one.
November 9, 2025 at 6:57 PM
“Gunman at the Corner of Naples and Damnation” by @coyhall.bsky.social leads off the latest issue of Guilty Crime Story Magazine, and daaaaaaamn is it good. Completely caught me off-guard. Excellent use of setting, and just the kind of down-and-dirty tale I like. Well done.
November 9, 2025 at 2:42 AM
I’m only on Book Five in the series, but you can be damned sure I’ll be picking up this new one when it’s released. You should too. The Frenzi series is so good.
Do you know what a lupara is?

Why not let Professor Killfrenzy educate you in Frenzi: When in Rome...Kill?

It's a bloody action saga set to be unleashed in just ten days!

Back to #EdMcBain’s 8-7. After disliking the last two installments, I was pleasantly surprised with THE BIG BAD CITY. Two interesting new cases as well as a callback to a previous storyline made for some great action. Plenty of twists, humor, and unique characters. Good stuff!
