So far, Mark Carney has failed to protect the international rules-based order he now speaks about, and has instead pursued a foreign policy that puts profit before people. This speech must mark a change. In uncertain times, Canadians need their government to speak - and act - with moral courage.

▫️State unequivocally that he will not join Donald Trump’s “board of peace.” There is absolutely no credible justification for participating in any part of Trump’s colonial aspirations.

▫️Stand Canada solidly and physically with our allies. That includes deploying Canadian troops to Greenland.

▫️Stop appeasing Donald Trump. An approach built on placating the bully in the White House has done nothing to protect Canada’s sovereignty. To use the Prime Minister’s own metaphor, playing nice at the table has not taken us off the menu.

Today, Mark Carney delivered a speech worth watching. But a good speech is not foreign policy. The Prime Minister now needs to follow his words with action.

As a start, Mark Carney must:

If we had a halfway decent opposition party in Canada, they’d endorse the words Carney used today, and then hammer him relentlessly on implementation or lack thereof.

If nothing else, pretty amazing Canadian PM Carney said the quiet part out loud today: international law has never been real and the ‘rules’ of the international order have never applied to the US and its allies.

This may indeed be the actual death of neoliberalism.

It's been a year since the first mention of a US takeover of Canada, 53rd state etc. Since then, an average of 1,700 fewer Canadians crossed NB/Maine borders per day, which using stats can estimates is $253,830,000 not spent in the US. From just NB land borders.

People don't want to accept that the primary reason that we have Trump today is that the previous administration completely failed. It should have never gotten to the point where it was in the so-called hands of the voters. It was already too late by then.

A teenage boy was walking home in Minneapolis yesterday when four masked men jumped out of a van & questioned him - with no parent or guardian present.

He was bundled into the van & taken away.

Bystanders heard the boy say: “Can I just go home?”

I don’t know how America comes back from all this.

Shame is what’s known as a de-motivating emotion. Unlike anger or fear, it makes people take fewer actions when they experience it

Employ it judiciously and against enemies, not friends
This isn't just a casual observation. Fascism scholars have long made this point. It's why calling them "weird" was a more effective strategy than talking about the prices of eggs. Fascism is an aesthetic political movement - you need to make people feel embarassed and horrified by it.
one of the most effective weapons we have against fascism is mockery, especially when its really funny

This is the sort of statement that was expected from every university president and law firm partner over the last year. That those statements weren’t made played a huge part in where we are now and people will remember.
Jerome Powell: "This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions—or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation."

It's *good* that public people who lots of folks pay attention to wore anti-ICE pins to a swanky event. It has gotten coverage. People who do not closely follow politics might get curious and look for information. And under fascism, making public your ethical stance is important in and of itself.

Using a technical term to describe an action isn’t just not “hateful rhetoric”—it isn’t rhetoric at all. However, this deceitful framing *is* a rhetorical ploy neatly exemplary of fascism.
Homan: "We gotta stop the hateful rhetoric. Saying this officer is a murderer is dangerous. It's just ridiculous. It's gonna infuriate people more which means there's gonna be more incidents like this."
