My most popular cartoon by a long chalk is also oddly niche, in that it mostly appeals to a generation who remember the song it refers to and enjoy the nostalgia for their youth. I can draw one for you if you like.

After another week of banging on about immigration, Keir Starmer's ratings fall to their lowest ever level.

At what point do Labour strategists start to think that maybe this isn't quite the winning strategy they believed?

From @philipjcowley.bsky.social - thanks to a happy coincidence we have a much more rigorous than usual understanding of the impact of Keir Starmer's "Island of Strangers" speech. As Cowley puts it "It is not obvious this was the intended outcome"

That American politics went off the rails after Barack Obama and British ethnonationalism has reared its head after Rishi Sunak is the real tell about how committed some people are to integration and post racial politics.
A country where Sadiq Khan can lead London, Humza Yousaf can lead Scotland, and Rishi Sunak can lead Britain is a country where the racists had *lost*. So much of this vicious bile has come directly after that and almost no one seems to draw the connection

Second shout for my blog on what I think Labour ought to do on immigration instead of the obscene policy they've actually announced this week.

Not sure how Labour can fully square the circle between admitting that Reform's proposals to deport children are racist, but their plans for deport children, even if born and raised in the UK, are "fair and compassionate".

Good thread. In short, we'd all be better off if Labour leadership obsessed about Spain instead of Denmark, where the centre left's hardline stance on immigration has - and you'll never guess what's coming - hugely alienated their base for few returns elsewhere.

@ringwodian.bsky.social following our discussion yesterday I've actually written on what I think Labour should do instead.

lunchtimelegend.substack.com/p/what-shoul...

You're clearly pretty forthright in other direction so I'd be interested in your critique of what I say here.
What should Labour's immigration policy look like?
I wrote a long blog this week about the new immigration policy from Labour which I find both reprehensible and feel won't work even in its own terms. This is what they should do instead.

I blogged yesterday about my despair at Labour's new immigration policy.

A few people said "Ok galaxy brain what should they do?"

Here's my answer

The basic problem with the temporary refugee status policy - especially one lasting up to 20 years - is it leads to very few removals (based on Denmark's experience) but does significantly worsen integration.

Nick Timothy, Tory MP most responsible for the Windrush scandal, gives Mahmood his support

The problem with Mahmood's argument is that it not only accepts that we've lost control of the border (we haven't, the processing of claims was stopped by the Tories causing a huge backlog) but that racist abuse is a legitimate response to this supposed failure. It could not be more poisionious
- It is entirely legitimate for the Home Secretary to highlight the overt racism that she receives for taking part in public life.

- Everybody should oppose that racism against her, whatever their politics.

- But it is important to make several other points about this argument about racism.

Aside from being morally repugnant, Labour's strategy on immigration isn't working, and won't ever work.

Asked if Keir Starmer believes British people want to "see refugee children pulled out of school and deported after 10 years in this country”, his spokesman says that “what the British public wants and what this government was elected on a mandate to deliver was to secure our borders"

Plans to leave refugees in a state of perpetual uncertainty about where and if they can rebuild their lives are not just performative cruelty, they are counterproductive to integration and the economy. It doesn’t have to be like this - 1/2
