gosh, I wonder if there's a clear and obvious progression from "fascists targeting 6th graders playing volleyball" to "fascists putting people in camps and killing them in the streets" that we have witnessed over and over again, making pushback back on the former essential to preventing the latter

It's a truly phenomenal movie and Geoffrey always stuck out to me. I went on a historical deep dive the first time I saw it and learned that some French nobles considered him the most dangerous man in Europe. Funny how the weight of history changes what gets remembered.

THE LION IN WINTER (1968)
John Castle plays Geoffrey – the son nobody but the historians remember.
Geoffrey: I know. You know I know. I know you know I know. We know Henry knows, and Henry knows we know it. We're a knowledgeable family.

The biggest example of this is of course the document that begins with proclaiming that it is a self-evident truth that all men are created equal. The grand opening gesture, and the belief in it, was only marginally blemished by the fact that its authors condoned and perpetuated slavery

food, shelter, healthcare, education, freedom from torture and equal treatment under the law are (amongst others) all human rights, and none of them require us to be nice to fascists :)

the difference between you and a fascist can't just be that you hate different people, it has to be that your principles apply even to the people you hate

"what, so we should care about the human rights of fascists now?" yes! a human right that can be denied to any person can eventually be denied to every person! rationalising the selective dehumanisation of people we don't like is literally how fascism justifies and perpetuates itself

IT'S SO GOOD
My ghost story for Christmas is the underseen film The Awakening, about a post-WWI spiritualism debunker (Rebecca Hall) called to a traumatized boy’s school where her education and modern ways are a subject of uneasy fascination, and her beliefs are challenged by an apparently irrefutable specter.

Reiterating this in light of the news of the DNC axing any review of why they lost so disastrously in 2024. There are only a few paths that lead to a better future and we must advocate for those paths fiercely and decisively.
Voting is necessary, but not sufficient. One of the reasons we're in such bad straits is because, in spite of a historic mandate in 2020, Biden and the Dems writ large were desperate to return to the status quo, and so did not confront the massive reforms needed to actually keep our country safe.
"But if we can just get the votes we can..."

They cheat. They bought Dominion so they own the vote counting machines. They are slanting election law in their favor. They will just cheat. Stop imagining the next election will be fair. It won't. They already cheated and will again. Cheaters cheat.

Dollhouse, like most of the Whedon television shows, is some of the best TV ever made, but Whedon himself should likely never work again, not only because of what he did, but also because of what seems to be a real ongoing refusal to acknowledge that what he did was wrong.
In the before times it used to be a good thing to specify Joss Whedon did something.

He was actually liked once.

Back in the days when I was still going to church, the pastor who eventually persuaded me to stop going to church had a phrase that he liked to say a whole lot, and for all I know he still likes to say it.

The phrase was "we're creating victims and villains."

This is true in matters both foreign and domestic. We tried the "pretend Trump was just a blip" thing with Biden, which is one of the reasons a second Trump term was even possible. The only path forwards is true, substantial change, including apology and atonement. I hope it's still possible.
I get the impression that Americans believe they can just elect a president who is a tad less crazy than this one and everyone will be friends with the US again. I don´t think that will happen. The US will not recover from this anytime soon. A fair share of Europeans see you as enemies now.

Out of nowhere, just remembered the plot of Osmosis Jones, in which a political figure allows a terrible disaster to unfold simply because admitting the possible threat of a deadly disease might threaten his political future if it's allowed to disrupt the normal future everyone's looking forward to.

He’s worth 6 billion. If he cared about humanity at all he’d immediately give at least 5 billion away. “I wanna solve homelessness in Texas” like fuck it he could end homelessness in Dallas right now for a song but charity, you see, must have an ROI and be negligible from your vast fortune

Man I kinda feel bad for the E33 team. Imagine creating your first game from scratch, winning the most awards of any game at the event ever, and people are just furious about it online.

Criticize the event itself, sure, but those devs did nothing wrong to deserve that hate. They made a good game
