Happy #ionosphere discovery day everybody!
On this day in 1924, Edward Appleton conducted a neat experiment to prove the existence of a radio-reflecting layer in the Earth's upper atmosphere.
To celebrate, I did a thing. You can watch it here;

When did we stop talking about lunar eclipses and start talking instead about blood moons? Are we now to avoid their scientific wonder in favour of dread-laden hyperbole?

Blimey. Earthquake caused waves that shook the ionosphere on the edge of space.
Earthquake
The huge M8.8 earthquake at Kamchatka Peninsula last night not only shook the earth. It also generated gravity waves in the atmosphere which echoed around the world, causing the ionosphere to oscillate too.

It doesn't get reiterated enough that "human on a bicycle" is not only the most efficient way that a person can move, it's the most efficient form of motion ***ever observed in land animals***.

The dream of seventeenth-century alchemists has been realized by physicists at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), who have turned lead into gold — albeit for only a fraction of a second and at tremendous cost.

Physicists turn lead into gold — for a fraction of a second
Colliding beams of lead create fast-moving, short-lived gold ions. Understanding the process could help to refine particle accelerator experiments.
