Space plasma physicist. Radar botherer.
A view of a grey Autumn/Winter day, strolling along the bank of the Thames on my way to a meeting this afternoon. I have never really wanted to live in London but every so often I understand the appeal

Now do the show but only with senior academics.
The Traitors is a very different game when the players are either friends already or in an industry where, if you’re making a project together, you are used to quickly bonding and making fast friends for the duration.

Landing at Wolf's Fang, a staging camp on the Antarctic continent 🇦🇶

The team are on the way to Halley Research Station on the Brunt Ice Shelf.

They were meant to get to Halley today, but weather on the rest of their route is causing delays. Not a bad view to wait with though, eh?

Pleased to see my BAS colleague, Ingrid Cnossen, quoted in this report, alongside input from @mist-uk.bsky.social compiled by @spacesciem.bsky.social when she was chair of MIST council.

Space weather is important to modern life on Earth - and future activity in space 🛰️

Did you know that BAS has a Space Weather and Atmosphere team? The polar regions are good places to study the upper atmosphere.

This inquiry into the UK's future space economy includes a quote from the team ⬇️

A subject that has come up several times in different settings recently.

The UK’s independent scientific bodies are highly vulnerable to politicisation - over the past 5 months I've been working with @martinmckee.bsky.social to map out their vulnerabilities and it's not good news.

Today our report is published!

Dear Matalan, back to school adverts in the first half of the summer holidays are unconscionable; deciding to air them before the holiday starts is the sign of a depraved mind

It is a hard time to be someone who is not a fan of Oasis. I wish those who are joy, but am a bit sick of the obsessive coverage on the radio.

The combined DRIIVE and FINESSE workshop has ended at BAS. Two days of fascinating science and planning for future ionospheric campaigns with EISCAT. Great to see brilliant colleagues.

Great to be back in Vienna for the EGU General Assembly. One of my favourite meetings, not least for the breadth of science on display.

Of course the highlight of the MIST meeting, beyond visiting my old undergraduate haunts, was seeing the majority BAS Space weather team winning the MIST football competition.

Just back from a fantastic Spring MIST (Magnetosphere, Ionosphere, Solar Terrestrial) hosted by the group at the University of Leicester. The community is thriving with world leading science and high impact space weather work.

Yes I have noticed.
No you are not original or funny.

Trip abandoned. A fatality at Stevenage means no one is getting south any time soon on this rail line. Time to head home.
On my way to London to enjoy some talks on space weather science from the L5 Lagrangian point at the @royalastrosoc.bsky.social. I know I am a bit later than the usual rush hour crowd, but the station car park was very empty. Friday is clearly still a WFH day for many commuters in my region.
