The 7th Antarctic Gravity Wave Instrument Network meeting has come to an end. @scar-antarctic.bsky.social #AGATA. Thanks to our colleagues at Utah State Uni for hosting us, it was an amazing meeting.
Also a chance to say farewell to Mike Taylor, a giant in our field. you will be missed!

The Warming Stripes have been extended again into the mesosphere to help highlight risks to our climate monitoring capabilities.

Like the stratosphere, the mesosphere is cooling due to the greenhouse effect & also shows solar cycle variations. (Thanks to @sosprey.bsky.social for the data.)

A greater awareness and scrutiny of the upper atmosphere is a must to inform on impacts and future regulation of satellite reentry. Let’s hope upcoming missions like the European www.cairt.eu and similar US missions go forward.

For those in the UK, tonight you can see my colleague, Jonathan Shanklin, talking about the Ozone Hole over Antarctica.
Do you love Professor Hannah Fry?
Do you use fridges?
Do you hate having a hole in Earth's ozone layer?

📣 Well, huge news:
Tonight's episode of The Secret Genius of Modern Life (about fridges) on BBC Two features BAS scientist Jonathan Shanklin, who discovered the Ozone Hole above Antarctica.

Hi Bluesky! We have a paper out today in The Cryosphere: doi.org/10.5194/tc-1... about Antarctic sea ice trends in observations and climate models (+huge thanks to co-authors, not on BlueSky) (thread: 1/6)
Brief communication: New perspectives on the skill of modelled sea ice trends in light of recent Antarctic sea ice loss
Abstract. Most climate models do not reproduce the 1979–2014 increase in Antarctic sea ice cover. This was a contributing factor in successive Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports allocat...
