Opinions are my own, apparently.
Looks like a theta aurora to me. Coincidence?

Much swearing as my whizzy telescope insisted on a software update as the eclipse ended and clouds rolled in, but I got something!

That tallies with the Chilton Ionosonde which observed a prolonged Es layer with a critical frequency (for vertical propagation) of ~10 MHz.

While #Duolingo isn't celebrating, this gave me a #Rush.

Ma-husive #sunspot rolling into view on the Sun right now. Images taken with a #SeestarS50 through a specialist filter over Oxfordshire, UK. #heliophysics #spaceweather

This morning's partial solar eclipse over Oxfordshire. Time-lapse, 1 frame every 30 seconds.

Andromeda galaxy gradually coming into view. Mosaic of around 400 ten second exposures with a #Seestar S50. Photons by me, image processing by the inspirational #JulesWilkinson

The moon last night
March 6, 2025 at 6:58 PM
Another clear night, more photons hoovered up from the 'vacuum cleaner' galaxy M109.

#bluesky by day here, but last night was clear and muli-coloured. In addition to gathering an hour of light from the Horsehead nebula (life goal unlocked), I 'look'd up in perfect silence at the stars'. It was awesome.

Seagoon: Ah Moon, ah English-type Moon!
What beauty! What rotundity! What delicacy! What purity! What joy!

Grytpype-Thynne: What rubbish.

The Moon Show.

Cold clear night here so I pointed the telescope at the Crab Nebula. This is about 90 mins exposure. Not bad considering the bright street lighting.

It was! Even enough to get a solar person out after dark...

Have been rocking my new cufflinks today. Thinking of two good friends and former bandmates who died within days of each other in 2024. While there is never enough time, and I am very rusty, drumming makes me happy. I want to play more in 2025.

So, astronomy question. I took this image of the veil nebula (I really did!). Given my auroral prejudice, I assume the colours are likely different emission lines but why are different colours so localised? Is that temperature, composition or...?

#comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas. Each night a little further from us, each night a little dimmer. Its current orbit is hyperbolic, suggesting it is unlikely to return. Hail and farewell!
November 27, 2024 at 7:28 PM
Meanwhile, out in space, #comet 2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS continues on its way out of the solar system.

Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas tonight, crossing the sky near the binary star Theta Serpentis (commonly called Alya). It means we can't see the comet tail clearly tonight but it sure looks pretty. And, as they say, one person's noise is another person's data.

Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas.
We're tracking this comet to see how it responds to the solar wind.
