A little update to this. A source emailed me to say they'd used an industry tool to look up Coral Hart's sales and they totaled only 37 copies for the books under that pen name.

So, yeah I do not believe the six figures on 50k sales the NYT reported.
I wrote about why I'm skeptical of that AI author earning six figures pumping out 200 books a year story, but also about how authors might need to surf above the waves of slop countercraft.substack.com/p/surfs-up-i...
Surf's Up in Slop City
How should authors navigate a world with disappearing books coverage and a rising flood of AI slop books?

It’s lowkey nuts to me how often people will just *not pay* you in publishing.

MCM were supposed to pay me six months ago for a panel, and even with the publisher nudging them for me, they haven’t gotten around to it.

NEW: North Atlantic right whales - a species whose fortunes I've followed for years - are having a baby boom!!

21 mother-calf pairs have been sighted so far, the highest figure in years. And we're not even halfway through the calving season (which runs to mid-April).

A North Atlantic Right Whale Baby Boom Is On—but the Species Remains at Risk
Researchers have documented the births of nearly two dozen North Atlantic right whale calves this season. It’s an encouraging sign for a species whose population is estimated to be below 400.

I’ve spent the week so far emailing people who don’t want to answer, chasing people for money who don’t want to pay, trying to work with people who don’t want to work and WOW am I ready for mma class tonight.

Hope it’s fucking grueling because I need structured violence STAT

My favorite form of emotional self harm is heading to the Ask A Trump Supporter Reddit to see that yep, they’re fine with everything he does, his decisions are great, they love it, everything is wonderful, possibly he could deport a few more people and that’s it, otherwise YAY champagne for all 🥂

I’m one of a small handful of Harper Uk titles being released this spring which aren’t Romantasy, and I think it’s a big part of why this book will die quietly here lol.

This is not a shade against any of those authors because they absolutely should grab any support they can get, it’s—

Hey folks! The Goodreads giveaway for GWATF is up and running, with 50 arcs going. Unfortunately USA only as that’s all GR can facilitate but if/when uk arcs appear I’ll try to run a (smaller) one for international readers ❤️

In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have named the mc of wip “Jay” when I know about six different Jays irl

So I’ve started replying to those endless scam marketing emails with “I’m sorry, you must have the wrong contact details! I’m a different Sunyi who doesn’t write books at all. I’m just a stay at home housewife”

and maybe it’s a coincidence but I have not had ANY such emails for days, now 🤔

I was hoping this wip would be sort of Station Eleven crossed with Scanner Darkly, but so far it’s shaping up to be more like Normal People with a slice of Fallout 🫠

I don’t think, at the end of this, that I can forgive the people who voted for him, or even the people who just didn’t vote. If you can, you’re a better person than me and I’m happy to admit it.

Not only is the scale of damage so ridiculously vast, it was also completely needless and avoidable.

A part of me wants to go check my dad’s alt right forums to see what he’s saying about all recent events, but this is of course a fool’s errand. There will be nothing good or kind in those replies, only disappointing hate and/or a lack of compassion. It’ll do nothing but give me pointless anger.
