The CME from yesterday's X5.1 flare is inbound and on final approach.

There are various predictions for its arrival time, but most are suggesting between 18h and 21h UT today (12 Nov).

The strong geomagnetic storms have triggered a "Grid Emergency" in New Zealand.

Transpower is acting to protect its power grid by shutting off key sections to prevent damage. Some areas of New Zealand may lose power temporarily.

G5 Geomagnetic Storm!

You'll start seeing hundreds of pictures all over the news today. Bright pink and red aurors have been seen down to very low latitudes (for those without heavy cloud cover 😫).

This one is from West Cork in Ireland.

Comment seen in a space weather group chat in a forum with space weather professionals: "Holy moly!"

The G3 storm threshold has been reached. More is to come. 2000nT deflection noted for the Kyoto aurora electrojet plot. Wow!

A further shock has been detected at L1 so this may be the CME proper, arriving at Earth in around an hour.

The CME has reached L1 with a strong southward Bz component. Aurora watchers get ready for a good show in around 45-60 minutes! It looks like a strong shock is incoming.

Incoming geomagnetic storms:

Effects from the X flares on 9 & 10 Nov should arrive at Earth at around 20h UT this evening (11 Nov), according to Nasa's WSA-ENLIL Solar Wind Prediction model.

An S2 solar radiation storm is now in progress. The scale runs from S0 to S5.

Possible effects at S2:

Biological: Passengers and crew in high-flying aircraft at high latitudes may be exposed to elevated radiation risk.

Satellite operations: Infrequent single-event upsets possible.

Solar Flare Alert: An X5.2 flare from AR4274 peaked at 10h04 UT 11 Nov. A strong R3 affected southern Africa.

A type II radio emission was observed. Electron and proton fluxes are above warning levels.

The Solar XRay flux has now reduced below M-level following a long duration X1.2 flare from AR4274.

An S1 solar radiation storm is in progress.

An electron storm is now in progress. Electron storms can affect space hardware due to charging of electronic components.

Summary: A strong X1.2 flare from AR4274 peaked at 09h18 UT 10 Nov. The flare was of long duration and has still not fallen below M-level at 12h20 UT.

Type II, type IV radio emissions and a 10.7cm radio burst were observed.

A large X1.8 flare peaked at 07h35 UT 09 Nov.

A type II emission and 10.7cm radio burst were observed. A large halo CME can be seen on Lacso C2 imagery.

The CME is not squarely Earth-directed,but it will be enough to cause significant geomagnetic effects in a few days.

All of a sudden it looks like space weather has taken the night off! No strong flares for 14 hours, and the solar wind has calmed down enough for "QUIET" geomagnetic conditions to be reported across the board.

A calm before a storm, perhaps? We shall see.

Multiple CMEs have started to block galactic cosmic rays in a process known as a Forbush Decrease.

Cosmic rays are currently down around 7% on the longer-term level.

Solar flare/CME alert:

An M1.8 flare peaked at 07h10 UT 07 Nov. Type II and type IV radio emissions were observed, indicating the release of another CME from AR4274.

As AR4274 turns more towards Earth, CMEs will start to have more geomagnetic impact.

A strong substorm is in progress at high latitudes. Aurora possible.

Magnetometers on the Goes satellites have dropped sharply, suggesting incoming turbulence in the solar wind. Further geomagnetic storming is likely tonight.
