Last night Earth was hit by a minor geomagnetic storm which was actually the edge of the X4 flare on 14 Nov from AR4247. Had the CME been square on to Earth, we might have been facing another G4-G5 storm, and with Earth's magnetic field still weakened by the previous storm, the effect

A moderate geomagnetic sub-storm is in progress at Kiruna, Sweden.

A very impressive prominence can be seen coming from AR4274.

GONG far-side solar imagery (also known as magic!) shows a strengthening active region (marked "P100") coming around the east limb in a few days.

Keeping fingers crossed it will provide some fireworks!

The active region that's brought us four X-flares in 6 days is sending some parting M-flares as it approaches the west limb. We've had two M1.3 flares since 20h UT this evening.

Update on X4.0 flare at 08h30UT 14 Nov.

Space Weather

Solar Flare Alert: A strong X4.0 flare from AR4274 peaked at 08h30 UT 14 Nov. An R3 radio blackout affected south-eastern Africa, Madagascar and Indian Ocean regions.

AR4274 is near the west limb so any CME would not be earth-directed.

Stay tuned for updates.

Geomagnetic conditions appear to have fully calmed down now. The solar radiation storm has also ended.

The CME from the X5.1 flare on the 11th arrived last night just after 20h UT. It had a strong northward Bz (magnetic) component. This initially cancelled out the Earth's magnetic field, so the CME impact and following couple of hours were pretty dull until the Bz finally swung south j

Welcome!

Just a quick note to say that the solar storms over the last couple of days have brought me a lot of new followers on Mastodon, so just a note to them to say "welcome to the feed", and I hope you enjoy it!

The solar radiation storm has now reduced to S1 (Minor) level at 23h20 UT.

Geomagnetic storm conditions are continuing with so far a few effects at high-latitudes (minor-moderate substorms at Kiruna).

CME Update: According to NOAA, the CME has hit us (my post about an hour ago with the Goes 18 data).

Stand down! That appears to be a false alarm, sorry. We're still awaiting the incoming CME shock to arrive at L1, although the data does look a bit disturbed.

AURORA ALERT

We have a similar pre-cursor signature of the Goes 18 satellite crossing the helio-sheath as seen yesterday as the Earth's magnetic field is compressed ahead of the CME.

The storm is almost here!

The CME from yesterday's X5.1 flare is inbound and on final approach.

There are various predictions for its arrival time, but most are suggesting between 18h and 21h UT today (12 Nov).

G5 Geomagnetic Storm!

You'll start seeing hundreds of pictures all over the news today. Bright pink and red aurors have been seen down to very low latitudes (for those without heavy cloud cover 😫).

This one is from West Cork in Ireland.

Comment seen in a space weather group chat in a forum with space weather professionals: "Holy moly!"

The G3 storm threshold has been reached. More is to come. 2000nT deflection noted for the Kyoto aurora electrojet plot. Wow!

A further shock has been detected at L1 so this may be the CME proper, arriving at Earth in around an hour.

CME update
November 11, 2025 at 11:29 PM

First effects coming now at geostationary orbit as the magnetosheath is compressed at the Goes satellites by the CME. This first CME is not going to be the biggest.

The CME has reached L1 with a strong southward Bz component. Aurora watchers get ready for a good show in around 45-60 minutes! It looks like a strong shock is incoming.

We're still awaiting the arrival of the first CME. There is definitely a geomagnetic storm in progress, we are just not seeing much effect from it yet.
