BAMS Distinguished Story writer (twice!)
Midwestern Gothic and Nebraska Noir. Crime fiction. Doom metal. Editor for Rock and a Hard Place magazine. Shotgun Honey alum. Should probably be writing. Might be playing Warhammer
Thinking about making my entire personality “a metalhead who unironically thinks cheap trick fucking rules”.

James Sallis passed today. If you only know him from DRIVE you are missing out on his incredible work
RIP to a true master

here's the evocative, perfect opening paragraph of DRIVE by James Sallis, a bloody flashforward nestled in a further flashforward, and an opening scene sodden with the kind of fatalistic dread that makes the best noir so existentially unsettling

icymi Uncertain Sons (novelette) online and free to read for a limited time if you're looking to take a break with distant, gross worlds with touches of Michael Shea and other things
It's a personal story abt parents and children and, while standalone, has a diff feel as the end of the collection, so, harder to discover randomly.

Undertow put it online temporarily (ty!)

But whole ebook's $3 until 1/31 too!

I live in a red state but give money to a lot of democrats across the country.
Going forward, that well is dried up to anyone who isn’t calling for the abolishment of ICE / defunding the government until ICE is brought to heel.
This should be the basic test for any progressive of any kind of means

My short noir novel, THE LOW WHITE PLAIN, in which in-love grifters hatch a fake kidnapping plot that gets out of hand during a once in a lifetime winter storm that ends up with a lot of occultist neo-Nazis and their political benefactors dying very badly is back in print today.

This is one of the most insane protests I've ever been to. Tens of thousands of Minnesotans in -20°F (-28°C) cold with absolutely manic energy. We are going to throw these goddamn bastards out of our cities.

The thing that strikes me about these assholes is that they’re so public in asking for grace but *so goddamn silent* in discussing their own faults and the work they’ve done to ensure they don’t arrive at the same shitty beliefs again.

Oh wait it’s because they’ve done exactly none of that.

I promise you we’re not fucking mad enough.
This is 10th-grader Arnoldo Bazan.

A citizen.

Immigration agents grabbed him and put him in a chokehold.

"We're from the United States bro!' he screamed.

Agents took and sold his phone

And when he finally got home hours later, his shirt was ripped, he neck had angry, red welts, and he sobbed.

No exceptions. If you use Gen A I in any capacity whatsoever, you suck.

Yes, the way you're using it too. You're not special.

"She probably doesn't mean me"

I do.
I've seen some vocally anti-AI people recently make an anti-AI post and be surprised there are still pro-AI people following them, and I can explain this;

most pro-AI people think they are somehow the exception. the way THEY are using it, SURELY you would take no issue!

well, we do. so fuck off.

Everybody read DOPE THIEF
Next up on the old reading list @dennistafoya.bsky.social 's DOPE THIEF. It's been in my tbr pile a while, better time than ever to start.

I don't have APPLE TV, so I haven't seen the show. One day I'll use the free trial & watch, but I want to read the book first before I watch it.

Will Paul go to bed at a reasonable time, or stay awake far too late, caught in the familiar cycle of minor dopamine hits from his phone even though he knows this device and all the connections behind it are killing his soul?

Place your bets now on polymarket!!

I’ve never written on my phone before, never felt like it was any kind of solution, but I just cranked out 1k words on a short story, just me and my thumbs and a beer in a bar, and god damn was it refreshing.
