Hi, I'm Patrick. I write SF/F, I take photos—largely in the dark—and I wrangle websites for my spending cash. I keep a blog over at patrickjohanneson.com, though I cross-post most everything here too.

Sir Terry Pratchett is best understood as one of the most interesting, deeply ethical practical (I would say Pragmatist but I cede to actual experts) philosophers of the late 20th Century who just happened to work in deconstructed fantasy literature as his medium.

This is about bullying and harassing trans people out of public life. The essay is next to meaningless, it's effectively a macguffin and every non-trans person is falling for it

I see there’s a post about microplastics going around with a photo of drinking straws, so here is my semi-regular reminder that the 3 biggest sources of microplastics are tires (45%), synthetic clothing particles (35%) and paint (~10%).
Lay article attached:
One of the biggest microplastic pollution sources isn’t straws or grocery bags – it’s your tires
Every few years, the tires on your car wear thin and need to be replaced. But where does that lost tire material go? The answer, unfortunately, is often waterways, where the tiny microplastic particle...

I like to use Sir Terry Pratchett's way of expressing it: The first draft is you telling yourself the story.

If you use "ai" for that first draft, you've told yourself nothing. Not a got dang thing.
Just a thing about this: a common statement in writing is that you can fix crap, but you can't fix a blank page.

I have heard AI apologists claim that this is why it's fine to generate a first draft.

Now, to be clear, fuck this.

But also: an AI draft is a fucking blank page.
I know I don’t talk about writing much. It is because I am writing so slowly.

But I want you to know that I am taking a part of this story that absolutely sucked and took me months to produce four of the worst chapters I have ever written and in the edit I figured out how to fix it.

All true, though it doesn't stop me checking my [email|Submittable|Moksha] every day or so when I've got something out on submission.

It is more important to create than submit work

to submit work than worry about being published

to publish at all than be too precious about where or when

to have work read than get awards

to be nominated at all than win—

And it is more important to make what you love than never risk failing.

Now this I like.
I had a teacher who reversed that and said "Know what you write." Like if you're writing about Elizabethan England, you don't need to already be an expert, just do some research beyond reading Shakespeare and watching Elizabeth. Research is one of the fun parts anyway. I found that much more useful.

Anything that's presented as a "rule" that all writers must hew to. Every bit of writing advice is at most a suggestion; take what works for you and discard the rest.
what is your least favorite piece of writing advice and why? 👀

look at how little effort it takes for someone on the conservative grievance circuit to destroy a life

millions of college kids have half assed an assignment at the last minute, you eat the F and move on

but the effort to push trans people out of public life will use whatever it can get
Worth noting that the student admits that she just threw the thing together in 30 minutes without reading the paper she was supposed to be responding to.

I grew up around "Only smart girls read" & "I'm not like other girls. I read." messaging & now everyone wonders why my generation doesn't read LMFAO

I propose embracing "Reading! It's fun at slumber parties!" and "Reading brings us together" messaging instead. Books build community if you let them.
