This weekend, there was time spent beating my head against code. This is otherwise known as updating my website. There was a Wordpress plugin that I used on my book pages that had a major security flaw. The creators of that plugin appear to have abandoned it, so I needed to update my plugins and pull all my books over to the new database, then get the database to display the published works and the series pages. Beating my head against code. I will admit that once I got the hang of it, things went very smoothly.

Let me repeat that. IT SNOWED. Why is this so groundbreakingly weird? Because I live just north of Orlando. This is where people go to vacation AWAY from snow. It is not supposed to snow here! And yet, we had two nights of below freezing weather (in the 20s, with windchills between 8 and 11 degrees). We set our outdoor taps to drip into buckets overnight so they wouldn't freeze, and woke up to frozen solid buckets. It's COLD. And next week, it will be near 90. I never thought I'd say this, but I'm getting tired of weird.

It is once again time for the annual aural hallucinations. Yes, it's the day after the Highland Games. Insert phantom bagpipes here. Although I'm not hearing them this year as much as I usually do. I blame the weather shift yesterday that meant the entire games shut down for a couple of hours because of torrential rains that led to a 20 degree temperature drop that NO ONE was prepared for. This is weird. Isn't this weird? The world is on fire and things are just getting worse and worse, and I'm over here in my little corner of the internet saying "Ummm... buy my book?" Boy, 2026 started off... I think that's all we can say, isn't it. 2026 started off. Happy New Year? I think? Today is my first day back from a much-needed break. Today, I get started on the sensitivity edits on The Coral Throne, which I hope won't take more than a week or two. I'm calling it -- this is my last blog post of 2025. I'm officially taking that break I mentioned last week, and I'm doing it right this time. So today is when I get to wish you a merry everything and happy always. I'm currently starting the wrap up of 2025. Planning for 2026 happens this week and next, and I'll close the book on 2025 on the 21st, after the Ravenflight signing at Spellbound (info on that is below.) I can honestly say that it's been an excellent year. I tried some new things, and they worked very well, and I've already got events set up for 2026, with more in process that will be added to the calendar as they are confirmed.

For me, being on break means I'm not actively writing anything. I still have shows and edits and marketing. But I'm not writing, so I'm taking a break. Or maybe I'm doing breaks wrong.

This morning, the words "So the frogs in Narnia are smashed," were uttered in my kitchen. This incredible out-of-context phrase came courtesy of my son.

"And so, having disposed of the monster, exit our hero through the front door, stage right...." If you're of a certain age, you might recognize that quote from the Bugs Bunny cartoon "Hair-raising Hare." Being of a certain age, I tend to trot this line out once I've accomplished something that i really didn't want to do in the first place. In other news, I was dismissed from jury duty today. Mostly because I told the judge I have a doctor appointment tomorrow that I scheduled months ago, and that's appointment three of four in the series.

I keep thinking it has to be almost bedtime, but it's not. It's 4:30, so, in addition to being a Monday, today is about 40 years long.

It used to be that when you finished writing an article, you marked it -30-. Thirty meant done. Complete. Finished. Yesterday, I hit Thirty on Have Yourself a Merry Little Witchmas. Ish. Thirty-ish. It came in WAY over my target words. I was told November 1st and 20,000 words. What I ended up with was 29,413 words on November 2nd. Hey, it's still a novella! It's also been sent off, so we'll see what we see. I need to flesh out this world now, which is going to be part of my "I'm not really working until January" break.

It's the end of October, and my brain is starting the process of winding down for the end of the year. Which is a little bit of a problem, because I am two (I think two) chapters from finishing Have Yourself a Merry Little Witchmas, and it's due in on Friday! No winding down! Must make all the words! In a fun instance of "This is Liz's brain on writing..." Witchmas is now set in the same universe as Heart's Master. Which means that if I stay with writing Camber and Merlina (which I might, because they are SO much fun to write!), there's a possibility of a cameo by a certain blind bardic mage.
