Hello. Do you know that African Asylum seekers - two of whom are people I know, one who escaped enslavement and the other saw her father killed in front of her - are being told in court that they will be sent to Uganda for processing?

And now their attorneys have to fight that?

Are female economists treated differently than males in academic seminars?

There's something to be written (and maybe someone already has) on how the democratization of statistical analysis out of the academy has coincided with the rise of stats as a rhetorical tool representing scientific certainty – exactly the opposite of what they are. See it a lot in sports, for ex.

I mean are we actually surprised that the culture currently curated by Nick Fuentes et al was literally spawned by the pedo cabal lead by Jeffrey Epstein?
So apparently I was right to shittalk m00t this week because it's been revealed that his boneheaded decision to establish /pol/ and subsequently ruin the website was allegedly born out of a one-on-one meeting with Jeffery Epstein.

IT'S ALREADY FUCKING ILLEGAL. Arguing for a legal ban on something that is already illegal for an agency that ignores the law is going to do what?

I mean, at least acknowledge that it's already illegal and demand immediate and harsh consequences for any person who participates or abets it.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Thursday said House Democrats will demand a ban on the deportation of American citizens as a condition of winning their support for legislation funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

A reminder that how we talk about empathy, how to use it and expand it for those in need, can often matter at the level of policy and may shape what kinds of empathic choices seem possible. We discuss a recursive loop between policymaking and citizen reaction, as mutual motivated empathy regulation
Excited to see this out in print in Policy Insights from the Behavioral and Brain Sciences. It's the first publication with @amormino.bsky.social in the EMP Lab, along with Joel Segel from Health Policy and Administration. At a pivotal moment for empathy, we consider its role for policymaking 1/n

Talk with your family, friends, colleagues about why empathy and kindness are important. Because active choices to not care are being rewarded, and empathy as an ideal is at stake. Advice to mind one's business is a recipe for a callous default that most of us wouldn't want our own kids to embody.

The Iowa Gambling Task is an extreme example of Jingle Fallacy and schmeasurement.

In 100 articles we found 244 different ways of scoring it, 177 were never reused. Correlations between them range -.99 to .99.

At the same time, we show meta-analyses combine these results as if they’re equivalent.
How many versions of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) exist? And how much does this affect research using the IGT? More than you might think. 🧵

I'm just going to keep saying this until I die:

In a white supremacist patriarchy, you have value only insofar as you serve the white supremacist patriarchy.

Kyle Rittenhouse & Ashli Babbitt did. Renee Good & Alex Pretti didn't. On Jan 6, the insurrectionists did. The cops didn't.

Rinse, repeat.
The people who spent years defending and even lionizing Kyle Rittenhouse and Ashli Babbitt now want us to believe that an unarmed mother in her car and a disarmed nurse were domestic terrorists who deserved to be murdered by law enforcement.

I actually think it's pretty easy to explain.

Younger people didn't buy into an older neoliberal elite's prejudices, the older neoliberal elite absolutely lost their shit at the notion that they might be called on to change, and fascists exploited that reactionary moment
Years from now, it'll be difficult to explain the things people in media were wailing about before all this. Sophomores writing underconsidered op-eds about cultural appropriation. Protests against demagogues on campus. YA drama. "Mobs" on Twitter. These were the threats to free society.

If I were an actual religious leader in the Twin Cities, I would be thinking about organizing the most enormous public memorial service possible for Good and Pretti. Time it with the next general strike. Put *everyone* in the street for a funeral procession that stretches for miles.

The regime and many of its supporters are surprised to see so many people in America define "Us" as "my neighbors, my city, my state, my country," rather than as "my race and gender."

And they seem to have real trouble processing the idea of taking risks to help others and stand on principle.
They cannot believe that white people would put themselves in harm's way to protest the atrocities of ICE. They cannot believe people would go out in subzero temperatures to protest their brutality. They cannot believe that people would organize to let the world know evil has no place here.

This is a white supremacist paramilitary operation. Their goal—their stated goal!—is to force America to submit to the President's racist domineering vision for the country.

The sooner everybody starts confronting it on the terms that they themselves have stated, the better.

the extent to which this administration is out of control is really summed up by the fact that they immediately went with “this was an armed terrorist there to kill law enforcement” knowing that video from multiple angles completely disproving them was out there and would be seen by everyone
