This is really the damning part of this Newsroom story about the rates cap gimmick. They had their performative policy and weren't very interested in being told whether it made sense or not. newsroom.co.nz/2026/01/15/r...

Mamdani: I have been told that this is the occasion to reset expectations, that I should use this opportunity to encourage the people of New York to ask for little and expect even less. I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations.

#NZpol This seems to be going around again (the article is from 11 months ago).

If NZ is “somewhere they don't want to be”, then it’s hard to argue they should have _citizenship_, as that defines they have no interest in it.

They could invest without the citizenship, surely?
Investor would only have to remain in New Zealand for 21 days under changes to so-called 'golden visa'
Forcing investors to "be somewhere they don't want to be" is a barrier to attracting people, the Immigration Minister says.

I didn’t realise how greedy and narcissistic Wellington’s wealthy clique was until I became mayor.

No fury like a privileged Wellingtonian losing funding for their pet project, but investing in the many? Apparently that’s too much to ask.

I don't think corruption gets enough follow up in New Zealand. The links (should I say "concidences") between donations to politicians/parties and laws passed. The NZF/Costello tobacco link. NZF and fishing industry. Property and virtually every RW party.

"at least I'm not as horrible as Ruth Richardson" has got to be the faintest praise anyone has ever been damned with
Nicola Willis going thermonuclear on Ruth Richardson and TPU's upcoming campaign against her.

She says she wants Ruth Richardson to stop "lurking in the shadows with secretly funded ads in the paper" and debate her directly on her "tolerance for human misery".

Nicola Willis challenges Ruth Richardson to debate on ‘tolerance for human misery’
The Finance Minister hits back at her National Party predecessor - but Richardson is not interested in “pistols at dawn”.

Holy shit. So Elon decides it would be nice to know what region of the world people are posting from. So they add that little feature.
2 hours later they figure out that many Trump supporters with millions of followers are posting from other countries. Surprise!
That "feature" is now gone.

Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

The Key Government actually cut contributions to 2% and suspended contributions to the NZ superannuation Fund (Cullen Fund)

National also canned Labour's compulsory superannuation in 1975, if we kept that we'd have been a wealthy country

Exactly this. This is both an act of deliberate cruelty towards a marginalised, vulnerable community and a trial balloon to see how far they can push, and how fast.
(Going by the last two years and the pace and volume of erosion, and active targeting of vulnerable people - very far, and very fast.)
