Holy. Fuck.
CDC source:

“We just had word that all our fellows and post doc staff are laid off effective immediately. The famous Epidemic Intelligence Service, aka the Disease Detectives, is no more. That’s 1260 staff.

They are calling this ‘Phase 1’.”

My mom is 81 and on Medicaid. Wonder if California will keep it anyway.
This is literally all of Medicaid btw
BREAKING: House Republicans have released their budget resolution. They are aiming to cut Medicaid by at least $880 billion, and cut SNAP by at least 20%.

2025 means wanting to stream a movie for $5.99 (in this case, “Flow”) and deciding which platform’s billionaire you hate the least. Tonight, Cook beat out Bezos.

We’re *this* close to elite private firefighters for the rich and a bunch of squirt guns and water buckets for ordinary taxpayers.
‘Will Pay Any Amount’: Private Firefighters Are in Demand in L.A. (Gift Article)
Hiring a private fire crew costs thousands of dollars a day, and most work through government contracts or with insurance companies. Some wealthy property owners are calling them in directly.

We know the 4th Pillar has been crumbling for years, but the resignation of the absolute legend @anntelnaes.bsky.social from the Bezos-led @washingtonpost.com is a terrible sign that we are already walking among the ruins.

Every day it breaks my heart to know that this level of misery is being inflicted on people, and that it's being done with American tax dollars that could be providing care for sick instead of slaughtering them.
Israel has burned northern Gaza’s last remaining hospital. And kicked out its patients, including neonatal and ICU patients. I picked a western news source since y’all seem more likely to believe those. I don’t know how else to get people to care.

Isreali military vehicles surrounded the hospital, the Palestinian Health Ministry said, and communications had been cut off.

Reminder—If the U.S. had had a single-payer universal health care system in 2020, nearly 212,000 American lives would have been saved that year. In addition, the country would have saved $105 billion in COVID-19 hospitalization expenses alone.

This might be the best we can hope for short-term
There will be Special Elections to fill the seats of Gaetz, Stefanik, & Waltz later in 2025.

This means in early 2025, House Republicans will be unable to advance their legislative agenda.

And if Democrats win those three seats in 2025, Democrats can halt Trump’s legislative agenda in Congress.

fondly recalling how after Jan 6 Congress went home for a long weekend, didn't start impeachment proceedings for a week, which then took another month
It took only ~2.5 hrs for the National Assembly to gather a majority of members (190 of 300) and generate a unanimous vote (190 of 190) to vote down the emergency martial law. The law says the president "shall comply" with parliament's vote, but doesn't specify a time frame.
