UVA Pres. Ryan's letter isn't just about the DOJ though. It credibly details dubious conduct from many people who were supposed to put UVA's interests first and didn't (likely because they agreed with DOJ's far-right pressure campaign): the Board, the AG, outside counsel, etc.

today at UVA's faculty senate meeting i heard some faculty (and, apparently, our current interim president tho i wasn't in the room for this) assert that nobody's academic freedom is impinged/nobody is self-censoring bc of these DOJ agreements to which i say, lol

my takeaway from this letter is that glenn youngkin, rector sheridan and their flunkies on the board are deeply dishonest people who are engaged, with the trump administration, in a mob-style shakedown against the university of virginia

one reason for "elite" as a category of analysis is to account for this flavor of thing. Nuzzi may not herself be a titan of industry or heiress to a ketchup fortune or whatever, but she's getting the impunity treatment because she's invited to those people's parties

Primarily focused on the DOJ role in this but, as a higher ed scholar, I can't help but notice that UVA admin seemed a bit credulous. It feels like he genuinely thought he could satisfy the DOJ, and I just never believed that could happen.

i’m no fan of jim ryan’s—he let virginia state police on campus to tear gas hundreds of people with impunity and didn’t seem to feel bad about it at all—but this account of what happened last summer is very, very troubling
