A bit of a contrarian view. Democrats likely won't pay a price for this in the midterms. The American memory is quite short on political machinations. But Republicans are about to learn a central tenet of American politics: You cannot give people a benefit and then take it away.

This Veterans Day, we honor those who put on the uniform to keep our country safe.
But our heroes deserve more than applause once a year—they deserve to be honored every day, not with layoffs or cuts jeopardizing their care.
We owe it to them to do right by those who served.

Whether you think Democrats should have pushed the shutdown further or not, at this point you have control over whether *you* give up, and a lot of you have decided that yessir you absolutely will.

Anyway, every single person like “the fact that there were only 8 proves there were more, the fact that Schumer voted against it proves he supported it, the fact that 39 Dem senators are angry about it means they are lying to you” is trying to spread their fear & misery. You don’t have to let them.

You are 61, you have had a heart bypass, a knee replacement. Here's $2000. Get negotiating.
Trump: "I want the money to go into an account for people where they buy their own health insurance. It's so good. The insurance will be better. It'll cost less. Everybody is gonna be happy. They're gonna feel like entrepreneurs. They're actually able to go out & negotiate their own insurance"

I wrote about what I see as the real lesson of Mamdani's victory: not that Democrats needs to move left (or right, for that matter), but that they should try to build real-world relationships with normal voters. publiccomment.blog/p/mamdani-th...

The truth is a muscle, and like any muscle it will atrophy from lack of use. "We all know Republicans suck, no reason to ever say it" is like saying we all know how to walk, so there's no reason to ever get out of bed.
If we stop saying the obvious things they stop being obvious!

I feel this too, and it bums me out. I have Some Thoughts on the deal and they’re not in line with the overwhelming consensus here, and I feel comfortable with them, but I don’t really feel like dealing with the shit it’d bring down if I shared them, and that’s a bummer.

Yep. The decision to only scream at Dems because "we can't expect the GOP to be persuaded" just tells everyone "Dems are the real and only problem" because if the GOP were the problem, folks would yell at them.
The continued insistence of treating the GOP as an unblameable Act of God while the Dems are the delinquent Gods who either cause or fail to prevent them is exactly why the GOP skates and why Dems get handcuffed far as actually being able to fight or persuade anyone

Yeah its why I've been exhausted by the freak out of yesterday. Republicans have shown they do not care about healthcare or starving people with SNAP benefits. That isnt gonna change and acting like a shutdown would make them was a lot.

To reiterate my "theres only so much you can do to make Rs not want to do the politically disastrous thing of blowing up ppls healthcare," I think even if the subsidies get thru the House, Trump would almost certainly veto them. He just wants to hurt ppl & refuses to see that voters blame him for it

Lol. No it's not.
So then we can fight on Bluesky about "why didn't X governor appoint MY preferred candidate?" forever. Does anyone here think more than 3 seconds in advance? At some point we're gonna have to look in the mirror and realize the problem is us. There's a real lack of pragmatism on the left.
Yup, and the damage isn’t so much in the story as in the proof of weakness. Trump now knows he has new torture tools to make Dems do what he wants. It’s why at least one of the 7 capitulators oughta be run out of office now, mid session. Get that number down to 6. www.offmessage.net/p/16-thought...
