Entertainment websites are disappearing, or having to double down on clickbait etc to keep going. A few thoughts, and a presumably futile request to Google for some guidance.

Okay then, Google: tell us what to do | The future of entertainment websites
Google's search results are, sadly, damaging lots of websites. What does Google actually want? And is it what a human being would want?

Starmer is really going out & saying (with his mouth!) "if you successfully get out of Afghanistan or North Korea and make it to the UK, and I grant you asylum because you're genuinely at risk of being tortured to death, I still think your wife and kids should be left rot at home."

Cool.
There is no such thing, as Starmer well knows, as a "golden ticket of resettlement and family reunion" for people who have been granted refugee status. This is meaningless guff aimed to play to populist fantasies that refugees get provided with everything. 1/

The even more unbelievable crime fact (which I learned relatively recently) is that burglary has fallen by more than 90% since the 1990s.

Did anyone notice? Nope. Does anyone believe it? Nope. But is is true? It is!
Useful reminder from Peter Kellner on the problems we refuse to acknowledge are getting better, and the politics of hopelessness that this breeds

I love London so much. So much.

Did you know that London has the lowest level of ethnic violence of any city of comparable size in the world?

Multiculturalism has in fact worked here. They just don’t want it to be true because we happen to have a Muslim mayor.
In London, hate will never win.

Sky News says police are "overwhelmed by the numbers". Met coped perfectly well with 2x as many at the pro-Gaza rally, 5x as many at the anti-Brexit march, and 15x as many at London Pride.

They're not overwhelmed by the numbers. They're overwhelmed by the ratio of violent thugs in those numbers.

London Trans Pride: around 100,000 people - the media barely covers it

the far right racist march: around 110,000 people - the media gives it full live coverage, minute by minute updates

The UK media is complicit in the mainstreaming of racism as well as transphobia

Yes, because you keep amplifying it??? Why is this the headline news?? The media are complicit in encouraging far right ideology in the UK.

First Ireland, now Netherlands explicitly saying they won't participate in Eurovision if Israel does. After so many vague statements, it's good to see two broadcasters being so direct about their intentions, and I don't underestimate the courage needed to put their heads above the parapet like this.

Someone has sent me a bluesky DM, but I haven't verified my age (because I refuse to give my private information to some leaky techbro company) so I can't access DMs to read it, so I guess I just have this notification for the rest of my life now?

This is trans rights, too. There is no viable position for the Democrats other than “trans rights are human rights.” Trying to triangulate a position where you throw trans people under the bus “just a little” to woo swing voters only feeds the right’s argument that trans people are a threat 1/x

Excellent thread and well worth a read!
Long thread: There are two main "defences" I see put forward of Labour which crop up:
1) If you don't vote for Labour you'll get Reform
2) It's all the fault of right wing media painting Labour in a bad light.
The thing is that neither of these are actually a defence of what Labour is doing. 1/23

NEW: Keir Starmer has said he hangs the English flag in his home and 'always sits front of a Union Jack'

He told the BBC: 'I'm very encouraging of flags. I think they're patriotic and a great symbol of our nation.'

is it only asylum seekers our Labour Prime Minister would object to living next to or would the sentiment apply to black and brown people in general? if merely the former, would he like to explain how he knows people he sees, say, in the street, actually are asylum seekers and not citizens?
Oh nothing, just the actual Prime Minister telling people they’re entirely correct to drive asylum seekers out of their communities

Just for perspective, a few weeks ago roughly 100,000 turned up for the London Trans+ Pride march. By contrast fewer than 3,000 ACROSS THE WHOLE COUNTRY, have turned up to anti-asylum "protests". Yet we are meant to take the latter as "the voice of the people" and the former as "the minority".

having thought about this for three days, my current status is:

what the FUCK are we doing trying to ban social media for kids and not banning AI use? we are literally telling them not to use the computer to talk to their real friends but instead to the imaginary technology monetisable 'friends'.
this makes me suspect that one of the routes that AI companies are aiming at is targeting young people. anything that existed when you were a kid feels normal and indispensable. especially if you always used AI to write all your essays for you. and to comfort you when your parents were arguing.

Anyone who belongs to any minority group needs to be aware that what is being done to trans people can and will be done to them. In a decade we have been stripped of our rights to exist in public spaces by a press campaign and a well funded lobby.
