Caleb Hearon on AI: "They're in the process right now of manufacturing consent for this technology and when ... they offer you hundreds of thousands of dollars to do an ad deal for them, they are doing that because they need your help to manufacture consent for this."

"Thomas Paine devoted himself to the American patriot cause because he believed in government by the people, not by the wealthy and connected few. He recognized the economy and the polity are inextricably linked and citizens cannot have an equal voice in politics while wealth is extremely unequal."
Opinion | The case for taxing billionaires is older than you think
A wealth tax, with a top rate of 100%, is common sense.

Double posting some joy.
I am thankful to have carved out some time to sketch my upcoming D&D character. I have never made my own character art before (it’s usually just a description or a found “close enough” image), but I felt the need to ensure the reference images weren’t generated by clankers.

I have been playing UO Outlands again after not logging essentially since shard launch. Naturally there are no open housing spots left, but I decided to look anyways. No houses placed, but I stumbled into a conversation that gave me the same awe as when I started playing UO 20+ years ago! Nostalgic.

Okay everyone, so now I'm gonna ask that you imagine what the future looks like when the folks coding LLM tools understand subtlety.

Every day is a good day to point out that LLMs, like any other algorithm, can have the creator’s bias infused in them.

Please do not use them for information whatsoever.

This quiz is a good opportunity to emphasize again that all short-form video below 6 seconds without cuts has now been rendered fundamentally untrustworthy. That length of time will go up, likely quite soon.
"The quiz...is a warning. If citizens can’t tell what’s real, how can we preserve trust in elections, journalism, education—or daily life?...isn’t just about innovation; it’s about protecting civil rights, public safety, and democratic trust." Reader EMHinMI www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Amidst rough news, I can at least say that @durrymusic.bsky.social has brightened my Friday.

I absolutely love the cartridge the cassette came in and just finished my first listen through on my restored walkman. No skips.

Keep doing y’all and hope to see you live again next time you come through!

I’d love to see some kind of legislature that immediately removes public officials from office who regularly claim to not know what is going on for initiatives they signed off on. If I showed up to work and repeatedly said, “I do not know what my code does” I would be laughed out of the room.

When I tell people it's obvious Trump is trying to create a fascist dictatorship, they grow quiet and uncomfortable. They don't argue with me because they know it's true. Even so, they hate hearing it. Because it makes them feel helpless. But we're not helpless. Get active now, while you can.

Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

It's interesting that Paradise, Severance, and Silo are hit shows about a group of people trapped in a controlled environment by a group of rich people who are lying to them about the basic structure of their reality.

Probably says a lot about where we're at as a people!
