it’s funny how when people who own big houses are alive they had nothing to do with its value, but when they die their kids shouldn’t have to pay any inheritance tax because they worked VERY hard all their lives for it

Huge respect to the papers for finding both an 88 year old worried about the tax bill on her 6 bedroom Kensington house and a 20 year old fretting about only being able to save £12k a year tax free.
Top work all around. These are not easy case studies to find.

Movie pitch:

Forward to the Future (2031). A high school student from 1959 is catapulted forward in time to the present day, where his/her dreams of home ownership and family starting are dashed by inflation, soul-crushingly poor pay in precarious work, and not being able to speak in memes

OK I know it's kind of clever to sell something Stranger Things-y for 11 money units, but it's a tube of toothpaste, we're in a cost of living crisis, and this is a Superdrug, not Fortnum and bloody Mason

Robbie Gibb was appointed to the BBC Board by Boris Johnson, was an editorial advisor for GB News, and worked as Theresa May's Director of Comms.

He is not impartial or neutral. The government should remove him from the Board immediately to protect the BBC's independence.

The BBC are accidentally running the subtitles to Mrs Marple over the Mercury Prize, and it’s rather wonderful. A few of lines could plausibly have been written by Jarvis.

Learned that an anonymous outside expert on submersibles did an interview with the OceanGate Titan investigation, and they released a transcript, with all the names redacted. The first line of his first answer? "I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic."

The PG stood for Peregrine Grenville, and I can't think of two names more fitting for him. I grew up on Wodehouse, who was perhaps the only writer who could spin the problem of how to return someone's silver cow-creamer into rich comedy. His books are about nothing and everything at the same time.
Today is P. G. Wodehouse’s birthday.

“Into the face of the young man who sat on the terrace of the Hotel Magnifique at Cannes there had crept a look of furtive shame, the shifty hangdog look which announces that an Englishman is about to talk French.”

"The cause of the explosion, in the explosives factory, was not immediately clear".
A powerful explosion ripped through a Tennessee ammunition plant on Friday, killing and injuring multiple people, the authorities said. The extent of the damage was not clear, but the blast appeared to have leveled part of the facility and left behind a fiery spread of debris. nyti.ms/4oih5Uz
