Keir Starmer is talking about closer alignment with Europe, so here are three simple resolutions for 2026, keep the promises on EU relations, take real steps towards the Single Market and Customs Union, and listen to the public that wants closer ties.

Keir Starmer has spoken about wanting a closer relationship with the EU, yet has ruled out a customs union and freedom of movement. Rebuilding ties with Europe requires more than just the Single Market - join European Movement UK to help us campaign for stronger ties with Europe in EVERY respect.

Brexit has devastated the economy and the proof lies in the data: Brexit has reduced UK GDP by 6-8% and investment by 12-18%. We need to work with Europe to reverse the damage and save our economy.

This year we backed our arguments with hard evidence and public pressure, from our Business Impact Report and the case for Erasmus+, to One Earth. One Team., defending the ECHR with 55,000+ signatures handed into Downing Street, and demanding action on the touring crisis alongside Miriam Margolyes.

The case for rejoining the Single Market and Customs Union is clear. A closer trading relationship with Europe would lower costs, cut red tape, and give businesses, exporters, and traders the support they need.

The European Convention on Human Rights remains one of Britain’s greatest achievements. Walking away from it would not be an act of independence. It would be an act of forgetting.

Wes Streeting, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, has finally admitted what has been clear for some time: negotiating a bespoke customs union is essential to repairing the damage Brexit has done to the economy. The Government must now listen, and act.

The majority of Labour voters want negotiations on a UK–EU Customs Union. Labour should listen to its supporters and act.

The economic damage caused by Brexit cannot be overstated, and neither can the importance of the solution - negotiating a bespoke UK-EU customs union is vital for economic recovery.
Britain’s economy has been damaged by Brexit. But what should ministers do about it?
The idea of a customs union has gained traction, but agreeing a deal would be far from straightforward

Brexit has damaged the economy, and the government now admits it. Our Head of Online Media, Jack Dart, explains why Labour figures are acknowledging the harm and why rebuilding our relationship with the EU, through the single market or a customs union, offers growth and higher living standards.

Rejoining Erasmus+ shows progress is possible, but fixing the damage of Brexit will require going further and being honest about rebuilding ties with our European neighbours.

The Government have acknowledged the damage that Brexit has caused to our economy, and now they are finally bringing us closer, step by step. Rejoining Erasmus+ will allow young people at every stage of education to experience other cultures, languages and everyday life in Europe.

European Movement Public Affairs Manager, Joe Meigan, explains why Erasmus matters, giving the UK access to the European knowledge economy, bringing students here to learn, and strengthening one of our most effective sources of long-term influence through education and cultural exchange.
December 19, 2025 at 10:01 AM
Erasmus was scrapped for ideological reasons, not economic ones. Rejoining means backing a programme that grows skills, brings money into local economies and reconnects Britain to everyday European cooperation that actually works.

Erasmus+ is back, and it opens doors far beyond universities, from schools and colleges to apprentices, teachers, youth workers and adult learners.

This is about skills, confidence and connections that flow back into communities across the UK.

More companies are moving away from the UK and closer to our European neighbours, due to increasing red tape and barriers to trade. The Government needs to recognise that we cannot afford to lose any more organisations, and repair our relationship with the continent.
