Marius, who was once the highest ranking executor of the Divine Emperor Akkan's will, finds evidence that Akkan is not what he claims. Akkan is a powerful man, but he is no god. When Akkan announces that Marius will ascend to live eternally in the Divine Realm, Marius fakes his own death and escapes with his apprentice, Lina Together, they travel to the northern wastes beyond the empire, searching for the Fount, a human wellspring of Divine energy and someone who Akkan is desperately trying to find. If Marius and Lina can find the Fount first, they can stop Akkan from accruing near-unlimited power. The Fount is a teenage boy named Hanetu who has a hero complex and no love for Akkan's empire. He sees Lina conjuring fire with her sword mid-battle, and he's in love, convinced of their destiny to defeat an undefeatable god. They join forces and plan their next move while hiding out in Lina's homeland, but when Akkan's loyalists catch up with them and capture Hanetu and Marius, Lina is left to pick up the pieces. But hope is not lost. Lina is stronger than she thinks and Hanetu is exceptionally resourceful. Can they make it to the imperial capital to defeat Akkan, all while being pursued by Akkan's enforcers and cultists? And even if they make it, what chance do they have to stop him?
