My 1st draft is half or less the final word count.

Revisions start character development, descriptions, story arcs, background info, and flow. Then I begin to edit where my corrects usually add more words.

Reading your work out loud is a good editing practice.

Listening to your work is even better.
If you do not have a volunteer reader, find a good text-to-speech program.
MS Word Read Aloud, in the review menu is not bad.
