Ohio wasn't great to begin with but it certainly didn't have magic and monsters. Thrust into the Realm, Kassidy will have to harness her new deity powers quickly...and then risk that very magic to save those she loves.

But he had witnessed other moments when it was just them like how warmly she looked at him, how she got that smug smile when she called him out for something, or fuck how every time he caught her heart racing when he touched her, or especially how loud it was the day they left Sybil’s, when she was in his room and he kissed her— This wasn’t liking someone. This was uncharted territory. This was obsession.

Ezra folded his arms in front of him. “I’m assuming your guard talked to you about the Leviathan.” Rage. It was all-consuming at this point. “That thing wanted to eat you and you think you could have talked to it?”

“Do you know how to escape this hold?” He asked, his face inches from hers. He grabbed her by her fist and took her wrist, pinning it next to the other. “No!” She glared at him while she thrashed, trying to free herself but his grip was too tight and his legs were bracketing her hips, his knees digging into her sides that made squirming impossible. “Let go!” “You want to try to throw me forward, because then you can trap my arm and roll me over.” His tone was so infuriatingly calm compared to the frustration she felt. “You do that by bridging your hips as far up as you can when my shoulder is in line with my wrist.” “Get. Off.” Kassidy hissed, her face hot from her blood boiling with rage and—something she’d never admit out loud: that it sent a shiver of anticipation through her that she didn’t really hate. “Do you want on top instead?” he asked, and she tried throwing her knee into him again as hard as she could, but he didn’t even flinch. “I can show y ou that way, too.”

He could sense those small bursts of power emanating from the Dagny somewhere nearby, but every time he turned to follow that tug in whichever direction pulled on him, another tug pulled him somewhere else. Ezra frowned, thinking how much a nuisance these fey were sometimes when an almost musical trilling sound echoed around him. He stopped in ankle-deep water, the mist so thick he could barely make out the enormous shadow in the distance. Her fear of the water and the creatures in it fell to the wayside, the pull of a crystal overriding her senses. “Where are we going exactly?” Xak asked, taking easy steps and being careful not to kick up the water too much. “There’s a crystal around here,” Rio answered after she failed to, wholly focused on her magic and the pull of said crystal. “And why is it that you seem to answer for her a lot lately, Hawthorne?” Xak asked, his words clipped. “Subtle, aren’t you, Harlowe?” Rio replied flippantly. “I have no idea what you mean.” “I’d like to believe you’re smarter than that.” Xak scoffed. “Smart enough to know exactly what’s going on.” Kassidy spun on her heel, making the two behind her come to a stop. “Are y’all seriously arguing right now?”

Av’ry had been walking ahead, sweeping the torch over the floor, but suddenly he stopped and held his arm out, halting them both. “What is it?” Fox asked. “Look for yourself.” He held the torch out in front of him. She followed his gaze into the seemingly bottomless chasm in front of them. “Ah, yes. I had wondered if we would see another one of these.” The shaft that descended into the mountain was much like the one back in Cillvala; this had clearly been the dragons’ preferred method of transit between floors. “It seems like the previous occupants had little use for stairs or ladders, unfortunately,” Av’ry said. “And no one got in before us to set up bridges, this time.” Mikiva sighed. “Good thing we came prepared.” Fox dropped her pack and retrieved the thick coils of rope. We just need to find something to affix this to, and hopefully we can drop down to the lower levels.” “And what if we need to get across?” Mikiva asked. “How about we build that bridge when we get to it, huh?” Fox replied.

Noah just has a few questions about this place...

From chapter 1 of #Tenement, my dystopian mystery about people living in an infinite building.
“Noah Boy,” she’d say to me, pinching my ear. “They’ll really be after you. You think all those bad thoughts—makes you as tasty to them as a chocolate truffle.” I didn’t exactly know what a chocolate truffle was. (According to legend, Nan Enokido had once stumbled across one in an empty room when she was a young woman, and had spent the rest of her life hoping to find another.) But I knew what she meant. She always said things like that to me, especially when I would get into one of what my father called my “why moods.” Why hasn’t anyone ever tried going all the way to the end of the Tenement? I’d ask. Or, Why do we even have a Front Door if we’re not allowed to open it? Why don’t we ever see the Landlord? How do we know there’s really nothing outside of the Tenement? If the Tenement’ll fall apart without the Rules, then why didn’t the Landlord just build it better in the first place? “Noah.” My father would sigh at my questions. “Please stop.” I didn’t mean any harm. But those questions were always popping into my head. If someone had given me some good answers, I would have stopped asking.

“It doesn’t snow here but it does get cold.” She sat straight up, the motion almost making her dizzy as her brain made a sudden connection. He’s never left the castle so—“Wait, so you’ve never seen snow?” He shook his head. “Never.” She gripped the back of the chair to steady herself as if she would slide to the ground at any moment. “We should build a snowman while we’re there.” She didn’t miss the faint uptick of his mouth before he spoke again, “You’ll probably have more important things to do.” What was more important than playing in the snow for the first time? Her thoughts were becoming muddled, unable to focus on the topic at hand. It took her a minute to realize she was now hugging the back of the chair to keep herself from going to the floor. “It really does feel like you’re drunk, huh?” Another half smile from him. Why didn’t he do that more? He was so handsome when he smiled. “I warned you.”
