This is one of the under-appreciated contributors to "achievement gaps" between income classes and rural/metro areas.
For example; where I live, which is both relatively rural and relatively low income, some of the school bus routes take over three hours. Their days aren't magically 30 hours long.

Our kids have to be driven to school and picked up and it sucks. The school system's official line is that every kid who wants a bus ride can get one, but my elementary schooler has classmates who spend *over an hour* on the bus *each way*, when they can be driven in 10 minutes.
This is obviously a, ah, provocative take on the subject, but it indeed an enormous societal problem that children have stopped walking or biking to school. There are plenty of individually rational reasons parents might drive their kids to school, but, in a wider context, no good reasons.

For those following the news re: EU fining X for DSA violations, this thread explains that (despite how we may see the right and the U.S. gov frame things), it isn’t about “censorship” or even content moderation, but about X failing to follow laws about platform transparency and deception. The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse.
I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email
