Use Signal. Use Tor.

Even if the NSA has broken them, it doesn't matter. They're not going to burn that capability on you.

Don't believe me? Ask the Operation Pacifier pedophiles who got unbelievable plea deals/charges dropped because DoJ didn't want to burn how they deanonymized Tor users.

Happy Birthday to 3/4 of the people I know!

Wild how we were all born on the same day...

I'm not sure what it says, but I'm pretty sure the fact I've heard more fireworks tonight than the past 10 years *combined* says *something*.

And it's still not quite 10:30 here.

Just spent three days banging my head against a wall thinking I'd screwed up something on one of my printers only to find that it was a problem in the latest manufacturer firmwares and rolling back instead of forward fixed it.

Profanities were uttered.

That "what to do if the traffic lights are out" wasn't part of their "list of things our fully autonomous vehicle may have to deal with" says a lot.

And none of it's good.

That all these companies start in cities (hardest, most dangerous place) makes their unseriousness clear from start.
Waymo has halted service in San Francisco after numerous videos & images showed its autonomous cars snarling traffic during the blackout.

With traffic lights down, Waymos across the city stopped dead in their tracks at intersections.

Seeing folks freaking out over this... it's fine. It's going to be okay. This is just a friendly "heads up" to other operators.

NTP source clocks going offline/out of sync isn't common, but it happens enough for the redundancy and fault tolerance of the system to be *well* tested at this point.
The atomic ensemble time scale at the NIST Boulder campus has failed.

Your annual reminder as we enter resolution season that “survive” is a perfectly legitimate New Year’s resolution.

Yes, 6pm on a Wednesday is definitely the time to push changes to prod for a restaurant ordering system...

This is one of the under-appreciated contributors to "achievement gaps" between income classes and rural/metro areas.

For example; where I live, which is both relatively rural and relatively low income, some of the school bus routes take over three hours. Their days aren't magically 30 hours long.
Our kids have to be driven to school and picked up and it sucks. The school system's official line is that every kid who wants a bus ride can get one, but my elementary schooler has classmates who spend *over an hour* on the bus *each way*, when they can be driven in 10 minutes.
This is obviously a, ah, provocative take on the subject, but it indeed an enormous societal problem that children have stopped walking or biking to school. There are plenty of individually rational reasons parents might drive their kids to school, but, in a wider context, no good reasons.

Y'all know the font thing is just a pretext to fire people, right?

Like, the entire reason for the change to Calibri was because Microsoft made that the default font in Word and State decided just allowing it was easier than changing the default (at scale) or trying to enforce Times New Roman.

Really not sure why everyone's surprised that FIFA 1000% understood the assignment.

Institutional corruption and pandering to autocrats are kind of their core competencies...

For those following the news re: EU fining X for DSA violations, this thread explains that (despite how we may see the right and the U.S. gov frame things), it isn’t about “censorship” or even content moderation, but about X failing to follow laws about platform transparency and deception. A thread:
Don't let anyone tell you that the Commission's DSA enforcement against X is about speech or censorship.

That would, indeed, be interesting. But this is just the EU enforcing some normal, boring laws that would get bipartisan support in the U.S. (I bet similar bills *have* had that support.) 1/

The level of detailed causality NTSB investigations get to always amazes me.

It wasn't just "a loose connection". It was "a misplaced label made this specific wire fractions of a millimeter larger, which kept it from fully seating, which caused a loose connection".
so apparently the electrical system fault on the Dali that caused it to crash into the Francis Scott Key bridge was caused by a feral ferrule.

And as a nice little bonus, a whole bunch of the people who were doing those investigations (and were good at them) left rather than take the reassignment.

So, not only is HSI not doing those investigations, they've lost the *ability* to do them.
And so now here are the things that aren't getting investigated while Trump & Miller chase their racist fantasies. Child predators, terrorists and human traffickers can't believe their good fortune.

My friend Kara, the one currently incarcerated at Carswell, has had her hormones cut yet again.

They haven't done labs or anything on her in weeks.

They've now reduced her to 3 mg a week for her HRT.

We are still desperately searching for legal counsel who will advocate for her. Please help.

So, this is even more fucked than it seems at first blush.

That rule exists so stores don’t price gouge the SNAP system. I have *never* heard of USDA having any issue with a “SNAP price“ being *lower*… and yeah, that’s a thing (not saying more because we’re dealing with assholes).
The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse.
I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email
