Twitching my lips in silent irritation over things I've been doing for donkey years (and more recently) whenever some one or other thinks they're reinventing the specfic wheel. I'm sure our specfic elders also occasionally feel that way.

Anyhow, carry on.

Day one of the TTL end of year reading starts with They Take You As They Find You by @lynorlane.bsky.social. Four youngsters and a non-talking animal in a van, looking into mysteries. Sound familiar? But this story has something different to say about monsters.

I have many male friends, colleagues, & a husband who get it. I feel able to vent to them about misogyny/patriarchy. I can't stomach placating mediocre - or worse - men as they remain unevolved & refuse to examine their own actions. Don't prop up this behavior; it won't serve you in the long run.

I hope men understand that it is very very rare for anyone who is not a woman’s lover, close friend, or relative to stand up for her when another man insults her in a room of other men. It is incredibly unusual. They may not join in the bullying, but they’re unwilling to step in to stop it.

The amount of ailments and injuries I have suffered this year has defied belief. But academically speaking I have been 3-4 times more productive this year. Ditto for my creative writing career. I lost in terms of health but not in terms of determination, focus and sheer bloodymindedness.

In light of the astronomical increases for my health insurance next year, I thought it would be a good time to encourage people to subscribe. (A few hundred should cover it. Sigh.)

It is December 26, 1983. I am trying to console George Michael, whose heart I have given away. I tell him I understand. This is as yet a lie.

Some estate stuff to do today, so that will put a wrinkle in my planned timing.

I periodically say this unpopular thing not to air old hurts/grievances but as a cautionary note: All fields have their little cliques/beefs/infights plus moments of demonising. If you're new; learn to discern. Learn to say no firmly & to avoid that ppl pleasing instinct. I speak from experience.

My hot take is that the Wheel of Time is SF (planetary romance edition) disguised as epic fantasy. And you know, I dig that. That is what hooked me as a teen; the fact that the age of legends could have been a version of our world.

People have a good reason to resist acknowledging the male loneliness crisis. They correctly perceive that women are being blamed and told to fix it.

But the real cause is predatory capitalists who profit on keeping men isolated and online.
