Somehow we turned that into wars and overtime and profit margins.

We need to get over this notion that existing social media platforms are at all necessary. Tech billionaires created them for profit, then sold them as socially beneficial even as they continually eroded any real benefits.

Social media has become a corrosive force on society, in large part because of how companies driven to maximize profits and engagement have shape dominant social media platforms to serve their interests regardless of the effect on their users or the broader society. Mental health consequences of what’s shared on social media, but also how the platforms are designed to keep people hooked on an algorithmic loop of content, affect adults and seniors just as much as young people — if not more in some cases. Platforms have also destroyed the information environment, pushing unreliable and often extreme content at people to get them engaged, driving them to conspiracy and right-wing extremism. That has only been amplified with the proliferation of AI-generated content.

Exactly this. We need to start making cheap, weird TV again.
This is not to use "weird" as a pejorative. It is to hold "weird" like a shield with vibrant pride - "weird" as something unique and beautiful. The Canadian TV of my youth was itself wonderfully bizarre and almost unexplainable. To loosely describe the plot of The Odyssey to unseen eyes is to describe a fever dream half-remembered. But it was real and everlasting, and it lingers in my heart on the strength of its weirdness. That it was Ryan Reynolds's second TV series role - where he played the leader of the in-universe youth Gestapo - is a side note pinned to a larger portrait.

In the 2010s, the Icelandic tv station Channel 2 accidentally added subtitles from a gritty crime drama to an episode of Teletubbies.

I have translated some of the highlights
A screenshot of Lala and Po from the teletubbies. The screenshot is clearly taken from someone's phone, as the borders of the tv can be seen, as well as glimpses into the apartment behind them. Po is in bed wrapped up in a blanket. The text below them reads "I know you were high at my mother-in-laws funeral..." More screenshots from the Teletubbies. Lala seems to be upset with a terrified Po. the text below reads "Did you kill the dog? Why would you do that?!" A third screenshot from the Teletubbies, this time the same scene as before. Po is wearing an apron while Lala seems to still be upset at him. The text below reads "You're nothing but a failure of a man."
