imo it's simultaneously true that 1) kids have the deck stacked against them right now and it's good to be aware of and concerned about that and 2) it probably pays to look back on your own childhood and be realistic about how many of the moral panics thrown over your generation were total nonsense

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick.

Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

No contract, no coffee ✊🏻
As of this morning, Starbucks workers across the country are officially ON STRIKE. And we're prepared for this to become the biggest and longest ULP strike in Starbucks history.

Say #NoContractNoCoffee with us: DON'T BUY STARBUCKS for the duration of our open-ended ULP strike! $SBUX

Call the United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and they will connect you with your senator's office.

If you're represented by one of the squishier centrists, be sure to make a call. Now.
Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.

Police officers who publicly declare that they’ll quit if a mayoral candidate they dislike wins the election are (1) usually bluffing—sure buddy, toss away that paycheck and pension—and (2) exactly the sort of cops cities would be better off without, ones who don’t see themselves as public servants.

The problem with billionaires is not that they’re masters of society steering all events around them, but they’re just as gullible, stupid, misinformed, and hapless as any dummy off the street but they have massive resources to waste on pointless and destructive misadventures

it’s very funny to make a distinction between cancel culture and what this is, which is clear government supression of speech. cancel culture isn’t anti first amendment, but this specifically is! which is worse!

Are we going to see a bunch of influential Dems named when the truth finally comes out? Yes.

Should they be prosecuted alongside the Republicans? Also yes.

This sort of admission—the VP is involved in prosecutorial decisions, the "concerns" arise from political actors, and the administration knows they don't have probable cause—would have prompted the Founders to impeach everyone involved.
JD Vance: "We're in the very early stages of an ongoing investigation into John Bolton ... if we think Ambassador Bolton committed a crime, of course eventually prosecutions will come ... there's a broad concern about Ambassador Bolton."

One of the biggest blunders (when well-intentioned) and betrayals (when not) in Democratic rhetoric over the years is their impenetrable insistence that what voters respond to is somebody who begins by finding common ground with their opponent, no matter who that opponent is or what that ground is.

Also: so much of the discussion around kids in public revolves around noise. Let me tell you that nothing is noisier than a child who is being told “no” or constructively corrected. If we want parents to enforce rules and boundaries, we should expect some noise.

the thing everyone is going to have to accept is that the post-trump period, whenever it comes, will not and cannot be a project of national unity, it must be a project of partisan project of renewal, in the same way that reconstruction and the new deal were partisan projects of renewal.

the real thing issue is that we have some groups of young men *claiming* to be driven right because of problems like male isolation when the right is not actually offering material solutions to those problems. what the right is offering is social and political power over women.

I have yet to read a single story about men adopting AI at work (without being told) at a higher rate than women that presents it as anything other than men being smart. Not one story about how it implies they're lazier and less ethical.
Because that's not the narrative that's being pushed about AI.

I am going to be so fascinated to read the post-mortem about how a revolt lead by tech billionaires lead to a gutting of both scientific research, university education and immigrant labor, all key prerequisites to the very existence of their industries.
I can't stress enough how close U.S. science is to the cliff.

"Numbers released in May by the National Science Foundation (NSF) indicate that if Congress approves the cuts to the agency proposed by the White House, the number of early-career researchers it supports could fall by 78%" (@science.org)
‘It’s a nightmare.’ U.S. funding cuts threaten academic science jobs at all levels
