Very bad day for gilts. There's been a few this year.

Nowhere near as bad as Truss era ofc, but I think that insane time has skewed our perception.

For instance, a rise in 30yr yields such as happened today only happened once in 10 years pre-COVID.

And not once during the 10 years to late 2008.

Great podcast from Jack and the IFS.
I'm not sure it's an altogether positive development that the bond market now features so heavily in UK political coverage. But we are where we are, and if you'd like to understand it better, this podcast is for you.
NEW PODCAST: Are we in hock to the bond market?

The Discourse today seems to be James Bond continuity, following purple signs at at Heathrow and salary sacrifice schemes. If you can’t see that as being the basis for the plot of a PTA film, I don’t know how to help you.

That's why I have "there's too many black people in adverts" as one of the most hands-down racist klaxons there is, short of violence or Nazi iconography. There's no pretence of a policy issue there, no tapdance of "legitimate concerns". It's just pathetic melanin whinging.
Something I can't get over with the Sarah Pochin comments is that it's not just racist, it's also pathetic? Like oh wittle Sarah doesn't like the wittle adverts is it? Get a grip, you're a grown woman and member of parliament, stop being a snowflake and find a real problem to deal with

Hadn’t, in truth, really absorbed the scale of what the Conservatives are proposing on ILR and immigration more broadly until this week’s Sunday Times interviews. Some thoughts on that in today’s note:
Tory deportation plan would upend Britain

Let's not humour those advocating deportation of UK residents with reasons why their plans would not work.

Keep it simple, this is not the action of a civilised country.

If needed, this will mean complete chaos and destruction of international reputation.

I can’t remember where I read it but someone was writing about people’s differing experience of law enforcement. Pour coffee down a drain and three hobby bobbies fine you £150 and yet the perception is of no action taken against shoplifting or fare evasion on public transport.
TIL: if you need to pour away excess coffee on the go, you’re not allowed to pour it into the sewer. Instead, you’re supposed to pour it into a bin???
I feel Thames Water should have been asked to comment.

This, this, this. If journalists don’t scrutinize this and explain it properly now then they have failed on their duty and will bear a share of the blame if such policies are enacted (most of the public oppose them and don’t I think realise what is being proposed yet).
Apropos of nothing, I really do think UK journalists and politicians need some reminding that mass deportation of LEGAL immigrants, particularly those with permanent status, is far more extreme than even Trump's America and would basically place Britain completely on its own among democracies.

By rights, Farage’s shilling for Putin should have disqualified him from UK politics. He knows it, and is now trying to spin what he has said previously.

Fortunately, @sturdyalex.bsky.social has kept the receipts. Please do listen and, importantly, share.

I see Nigel Farage is back to claiming he "predicted" the war between Russia and Ukraine in the EU Parliament, when in fact he spoke AFTER the annexation of Crimea, to defend Russia and claim it was all the EU's fault.
