A BETTER TOMORROW is nearly 40 years old and this scene is still one of the best examples of intercutting between slow motion and 24fps I've ever seen. Works so well, and I think this whole sequence (with the build up and guns in plant pots) is one of the best action set-pieces John Woo's ever done.

You can go, okay, historical drama, feudal life was terrible! Except this is a radical leftist comic in an alt-manga magazine that really struck a chord with the sometimes violent student movement in 1960s Japan that was protesting the Japan-US Security Treaty & other nationalistic right wing shit.

No idea how the deal went down but I'm gonna say it was a case of right place at the right time. The Hong Kong government has been really pushing the city's soft power assets, its cinema in particular, so I'm not surprised if they had a hand in persuading Kowloon Development.

I just finished "Showa 1944-1953: A History of Japan" by Shigeru Mizuki. It's the third installement in the series. It's truly remarkable work. We follow both Mizuki's life as a Japanese student (previous volumes), then soldier, then artist, as well as the global events of the years covered. 1/2
