This is the feeling that Eric Adams was trying to capture when he said that New York is the only city where you might see a plane fly into the World Trade Center
Mamdani: Where else can you hear the sound of the steel pan, savor the smell of sancocho, and pay $9 for coffee on the same block? Where else could a Muslim kid like me grow up eating bagels and lox every Sunday?

as a texan i'll spare people zohran takes but one thing i think we're going to see even more of now that he's mayor is mainstream media shift the goal posts of what having a mandate is. trump had a mandate when he narrowly won but zohran has to reach out to all these factions no matter what

I started a newsletter in 2025 following a @niemanfoundation.bsky.social just so I'd have something to do with all the stuff I was reading in the stacks about US radio history and how it resonates with and shapes media, particularly podcasting, today. A 🧵 of fav posts: continuous-wave.beehiiv.com

This is probably the video I have rewatched the most in the last two years, and I recommend Dan's post as well.
I wrote a little thing about "Fairytale of New York" and about hope for a better year, but mostly I wanted to share the rendition of the song played at Shane MacGowan's funeral in 2023 because it's so beautiful. Happy Christmas, I love ya baby. dansinker.com/posts/2025-1...

really cannot be emphasized enough that bari weiss has literally never done journalism. i don’t mean that in the pejorative sense. i mean that in the “has never performed the job she was hired to do” sense
One explanation for Bari killing the story is that she did so as a public act of fealty to the administration. But another is that, as an inexperienced journalist, she doesn’t understand that a refusal to go on the record is a kind of comment in and of itself

Gender-affirming care for youth is just simple medical care. It isn’t political, it’s not radical. It is small-c conservative care that is what is recommended by doctors to protect the health and lives of kids and teenagers. Please protect trans kids.

one of the great, pernicious myths perpetrated about higher ed—which media, higher ed administrators, politicians, and a number of faculty are complicit in spreading—is that humanities departments close due to some combination of cratering student demand and unjustifiable cost. It’s not true
My humanities dept was relevant. Majors were up. Courses were 100% enrolled. Revenue positive, GE serving, etc etc. We were still eliminated.

The problem is ideological administrative destruction. Couldn’t write a report, a self study, or a spreadsheet against that.
'For humanities departments to continue to matter, they must challenge the modern world rather than accommodate it. Indeed, the most useful lesson the humanities have to offer today is a profoundly countercultural one: Difficulty is good, an end in its own right.' 2/2

This year's edition of "Best American Sports Writing" is edited by Hanif Abdurraqib and contains gems like this that challenge the typical boundaries of sports writing:

Of the three stages of a pilgrimage — departure, initiation and return — the last is the least examined and perhaps most important.

Good thread.
I left Ireland and moved to New York in 1997. Decades on, what the US has become has broken my immigrant heart.

It also baffled me, until I began to piece together Gen X memories of apartheid South Africa.

I got very into Hartley's films during the 90's and enjoyed them for how he showed how weird the experience of everyday life could be through his choices in direction.

Good article looking over his work. Reminds me I should catch up on his more recent films.

(And I can hear that header photo.)
