@sarahkendzior.bsky.social has been making this point for a while and does not paywall her work. I so appreciated that when I was too broke to pay and am happy to do so now that I’m a bit better off. Pretty much everyone I know got a copy of her latest book for Xmas this year from me.
As AI, deepfakes etc. become ubiquitous, people who may have stopped reading newspapers are going to get tired of trying to figure out what's real and go back to reliable sources of information that they don't have to second-guess. Outlets that don't paywall will be first in line for those eyes.

This teenager saved his neighbor's dog from drowning in a freezing pond. This is Bernard. His family contacted emergency services right away, but high school senior Hugh Pinneo got to Bernard first. Hugh said he's "just glad I acted that day and saved the dog's life." We are too. 12/10 for all
