Words to remember as we come to the end of 2024:

“The spear in the Other's heart is the spear in your own: You are they.

There is no other wisdom, and no other hope for us but that we grow wise.”

Trump isn't just suing the IRS. He's waging a war on it.

His regime has...

-Shut down the IRS's Direct File program, a huge gift to the tax prep industry

-Gutted IRS staff, leaving fewer employees to assist taxpayers

-Deprioritized federal tax prosecutions, letting tax cheats off the hook

The people who are saying shit like "well it's either this or the borders are totally open" are doing their best to convince America that we should have completely open borders.

Everyone needs to understand how the overly complicated, circuitous, and mostly inefficient welfare systems consume far more money than if they just gave everyone Universal Basic Income. So much needless administration, so little actual help for the poor. #UBI
I will simply never recover from reading this sentence:

"Since Georgia implemented work requirements in 2020, they have spent twice as much on Deloitte consultants and administrative costs as on healthcare for people."
Today, Luke Farrell (@lukef.bsky.social) explains how complex eligibility requirements have turned America’s safety net into a lucrative revenue stream for monopolistic private contractors.

Abolishing ICE isn’t enough.

Representative Delia C. Ramirez says the real problem is DHS itself: “The problem isn’t ‘training.’ DHS was built to violate our rights.”

@sharonzhang.bsky.social reports on why calls to dismantle the whole department are growing.
House Democrat Says Abolishing ICE Isn’t Enough — DHS Must Go, Too

A reminder that ICE hasn’t slowed down in Minneapolis at all.

Outside of Minnesota, it might feel like everything has changed since Alex Pretti’s murder. But ICE hasn’t actually lost any power and they’re continuing to terrorize our communities.

The Senate bill is rooted in the idea that we just need to get BP/ICE "back to" only terrorizing people we deem worthy of being terrorized, and not White people. The exact problematic understanding people have been trying to warn against... While a lot of White people insisted that concern was silly

Keep in mind ICE is just replicating police lies/crime, but we aren’t used to a new thug force! Swallowing racist criminal police lies is baked in, tho. Govt is puzzled why it’s not working now. They WILL resist abolishing ICE, with a fury.

Why? They fear the broader awakening including police.

Why such a strong leaning toward self-denial in U.S. politics?

Conservatism is self denial. It’s antihuman denial. Living beings flow, change, n are adaptable. That’s why they are living. Dead things are fixed. To angle toward a state of stagnance n stasis, more than sad, is entropy.

If you want to know what I want Democrats to do, please look at everything the GOP has done to fuck shit up when it was the minority party and copy and paste those tactics.
I want Democrats to use every lever at their disposal to shut things down. They have the power to obstruct and gum up the works, the only thing stopping them is outdated norms.

People are being executed in the streets and if elected Dems aren't prepared to do dramatic things, they can fuck off.
What do y’all expect Dems to do? Undo the Big Beautiful budget bill (that the GOP majority passed)? Even if Dems hold up the budget resolution and shut down the govt, DHS and ICE will continue to operate. So what, exactly, can they do as the minority party?

The Democrats suggesting these milquetoast compromises are engaging in a huge mistake the union leaders call “negotiating with yourself.”

Any stance short of “Fuck you. Abolish ICE” leaves no room for meaningful change.

This move shows Democratic leaders are not just weak but also incompetent.
If Murphy et al are making a list of basic concessions upon which they’ll cave— which is what these “demands” really are: masks and visible badge numbers must be at the very top of the non-negotiable portion of that list and those state investigations? Must be *civilian* oversight boards.

Holding law-breaking ICE agents legally accountable is the bare minimum.
