I have been ruminating on the idea that the "walmart-ification" of America did bring a fair amount of affordability at the cash register and how that trend is basically played out.
I think it’s too conceptual for the kinds of columns Bloomberg has me write, but it’s interesting to think of 2011 as the year of inequality and how that reshaped Dem politics over the next decade, and arguably just last week affordability became the buzzword of 2025 that will carry on for years.

C-suites are a lottery, not a meritocracy, by design. The compensation reflects the jackpot winnings.
Large companies need a certain number of people willing commit every waking hour. Once you're in that club, then you get more or less a random chance of being elevated to the top.

it's not that i ever doubted that being a barista was a skilled position, but my year-long effort to try to produce a half-decent latte at home has convinced me that a good barista is easily more skilled than virtually every c-suite executive on the planet

It's honestly pretty remarkable that half the homes can even possibly be bought by home buyers 62+.

It's amazing the command of the technology press that Elon has because this post hits a day ago, and then all of sudden all techno slop generators are pumping out "when he's not running trillion dollar businesses, he's voraciously reading. Here's 9 books we know Elon loves"

Fun fact. About 25 minutes north of Milwaukee, you enter NOAA'S "Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary." Among the best places to explore shipwrecks.
In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.
The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.
The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.
Why?
It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.
