I got this useful bon mot from a middle school teacher recently.

In response to, “I DONT UNDERSTAND,” he calmly said, “okay what steps have you taken to understand?”

And that’s when I realized that a lot of folks have no steps.

It’s ok young people aren’t worried about the oceans boiling and it’s not “kitchen table” to stop global staple crops from becoming unfarmable.

With democrats like these who needs the other guys
Since the beginning of 2025, Democrats have pulled back from talking about climate change, according to data analyzed by The Post.
At the same time, nations and companies have been whittling down their goals — or going silent on the issue entirely.
The big issue Democrats have stopped talking about
A Washington Post analysis of Democratic lawmakers’ appearances and social media posts show they are going quiet on climate.

the worst part is that for the people at the top "good at math"/sciencey is essentially a vibe one socially codes their way into by being minimally competent at informally discussing things actual math/science people do, unless (e.g.) Elon Musk has proven a theorem I didn't hear about.
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

How’d he learn to play porno vids on his state computer during board meetings?
Very interesting nugget in this profile of (now former) Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters' quiet relationship with far-right Texas billionaire Tim Dunn who, per sources, changed Walters "from loving schoolteacher to rightwing radical."
Former state superintendent’s legacy filled with politics, turmoil
Southwest Ledger Editor’s Note: This story is the first installment in a multi-part series about the fallout and impact of Ryan Walters’ tenure as Oklahoma’s State Superintendent of Public Instruction...

"Scared of Charlotte" is a whole new level of "scared of cities" that I'd never even considered possible
Rep. Pat Harrigan: "I have asked Josh Stein, our governor, to consider working with President Trump to allow the National Guard to come into Charlotte ... use the National Guard as a force multiplier and they can a lot of load off the Charlotte PD."

Lololol who’d a thunk it
UPDATE: The Senate votes 53-47 to shoot down the Baldwin amendment to extend ACA funds for 1 year. A party-line vote with every Republican rejecting it.
An important vote in this series: Tammy Baldwin’s proposal to extend ACA expiring funds for 1 year. It’s structured as a motion to table (i.e. scrap it from the amendment tree). But it’ll show the appetite (or lack thereof) in the Senate to address this issue.

As a rational American I’ll just make sure my whole family gets only and exactly $1,500 worth of sick in a given year. Which will be super easy because I only learn how much care costs after I get billed for it.
What the actual fuck???

“Cassidy has been exhorting his colleagues to back a new idea to put money into employer-sponsored accounts that would allow individuals to set aside pre-tax dollars for medical expenses.”

HALF OF ACA ENROLLEES ARE SELF-EMPLOYED.
Democrats want to extend Obamacare credits. Republicans have other ideas. (Politico)

This would be better. The fact that none of them have the guts to even *say* this is horrifying
instead of saying this was good strategy, maybe senate dems should say: "the republicans were going to kill people by starving them to death, and because we aren't monsters, we decided to let this fight go. We'll keep fighting. Stop electing monsters."

Trying to win over anti-immigrant voters with stuff like this is so dumb.

Immigrants already pay more into social security than they collect, but voters don’t believe it. Immigrants are already limited on federal benefits, voters don’t believe it. This isn’t going to change anything but help Trump!

Yes, what I have been told is that after Reid retired, Schumer went to senators and said “Remember how he’d always try to push you towards hard votes? How much you hated it? I won’t do that, I’ll let you do what you want.” And that’s how he became majority leader and how he’s governed ever since.
That’s why they hated Harry Reid.
